The Reviews about Papa Was a Rolling Stone (page 2/ 3)
------ performed by The Temptations

sentimental hit | Reviewer: muriungi | 7/27/08

I have listened to the lyrics of this song from all kinds of musicians who have redone it time and over again..I cant help but almost dance to all of them with the same gusto! Growing up in an African village in the 70's when the song was a hit, makes me draw a comparison to many fathers of them days..and when we were boys we would ask our peers if their father were a 'thunder' depicting the 'rolling stone in the song' to signify dads like the one mentioned in the song! The hit touched and continues to touch all souls regardless of race, color, country or class....And poses a big question to all dads in the whole world..if they would like to be as mysterious as the father mentioned in the lyric..thanks to Temptations for reminding the dads of their roles in such a sentimental way..Anybody out there who knows where i can get all this lyric by all musicians in a single DVD or CD? ..Cheers

Come on you idiots...everything expressed in this song suggests that the true meaning is and should be "alone". Intuitively, it is easier to understand why mama uses this word specifically: in agreement with her son that not only he but the entire family felt as if they didn't know the father. The suggestion that somehow the father has left the family in debt could be debated but is an afterthought at best. Thank you for support.

Papa Was A Rollin Stone | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/19/08

When I hear the song, I remember dancing to this music during family parties as a young school-age child. Recently purchased the CD, because the songs listed brought back so many memories of Motown music.

I have not had the opportunity to view that Temptations-themed movie that all the young people rave about, but the Papa Was A Rolling Stone record stays in the repeat mode on my car stereo since it was purchased in mid-December.

I really love the music prelude at the beginning of the song. The instruments are superb and classic. The impromptu sound of the horns are superb. The soft violins and bass guitar make giggle on the inside.

Dennis' vocals make me think about my father's southern background especially his southern accented speech. Eddie's voice is so sweet and smooth that I wonder just how unique the tone is. The singer with the deep baritone tone voice makes me giggle when I think about how he entertain us as only he could widen and seemingly bulge his eyes when singing the words "and the band plays on".

Young Rappers and young vocal groups need more about their heritage and seek to emulate their predecessors and become knowledable about the Temptations group.

a loan versus alone and temptations | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/23/07

First let me say how powerful this song really is. Temptations, if you only knew the controversy of the lyrics in this song. My Husband and everyone that I associate with, love the temptations. We listen to your CD that contains "Papa was a rolling stone" everytime we're together and we continue to debate the meaning "a loan" vs "a lone". Although I've seen your lyrics in writing, "a lone", I'm convinced that depending on where you are in your life, dictates what those play on words really mean. In my mind, if papa was a rolling stone, wasn't his family left a lone a long time ago? If he had to beg, borrow, still; doesn't that tell us that he must have left his family sattled with a lot of bills which would mean he left us a lot of Loans that had to be paid back? Can we agree then that possibly we need to agree we need to examine the need to add "a Loan" and " a lone to the lyrics and leave it up to ones interpretation.

Hall of Fame | Reviewer: TJ | 10/29/07

If there was a Rock and Roll Song Hall of Fame, this would be a no-brainer. Rhythmically, socially, eloquently, dynamically, and Orchestrally, dis is da bomb. Not to mention BRILLIANT scoring and playing by the band.

But I have to disagree on recent post on lyrics, he didn't leave us "a loan", he left us "alone", meaning his contribution was irrelevant, and, ironically, in the state in which we were in before he passed. It is more poignant and a much better play on words.

Regardless, it is one of the Temptations best, and that's saying something.

genuine SOUL... | Reviewer: Hugo Van Driessche | 10/25/07

a fantastic piece of music, with indeed compelling lyrics and and music really stays inside your head. I was taken by this song from the very first time I heard this song to this very day (and that's quiet a period). I still love soul music, music with a hart and a message.
I always understood the words, mentioned above as "all he left us was A LOAN" and I'll stick with that!

I love this song, my father use to listen to this group all the time and I guess you could say I learned to appreaciae this type of music from him.

All he left US was "A LOAN!"

The reason that lyric is chosen is because he didn't leave them any cash or knowledge when he left, all he left them was alone. It's really not complicated to figure out what the lyric means.

A song for all time | Reviewer: chuck | 6/3/07

Of all the Temptations' hits, this has to be the most heartfelt, soulful, and honest songs of all time. The lyricist asks what happened to his father. His mother, possibly not wanting to besmirch
her children's father any more than he had already been, answers none of their questions, but repeats the song's hypnotic refrain. Supposedly written by one of the Temptations not about his own father, but one of the other singers (whose father died on a September 3. I agree with "tempted" completely. I heard the song yesterday, and again it was in my mind today, which is what brought me to this site.

amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/19/07

I *love* this song. Put it on repeat and listen for an hour! The violin (?) in the background is great && contributes to the sound-- and the vocals themselves are superb.
