Papa Was a Rolling Stone | Reviewer: Richard Harris | 6/1/06

In an effort to square a word in the lyrics - "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" -with my ‎expectation of the most likely choice between "alone" and "a loan" - I incorrectly chose ‎‎"a loan."‎

I am still "self convinced" that the more fitting words would not be "alone" - but "a loan."‎

I tried to identify a catch-word for this "word-tug." "Qualifiedly" I used the "tug-word" - ‎‎"montegreen."‎

I still do not know the derivation of the word but the words in a song we (quote) "mangle ‎or mess-up" is known as "mondegreens."‎

"All he left us was a 'montegreen!'" | Reviewer: Richard Harris | 4/22/06

I don't know the derivation of the word 'montegreen' or even if I have spelled it correctly but it refers to song lyrics whose meaning and choice (of) are commonly confused or misunderstood with a similar sounding word.
Take "alone" versus "a loan." In the phrasing - "Papa was a rolling stone - when he died all he left us was alone" - I had believed that the lyrics referred to 'a loan' before I saw the words in print.
In my opinion the context and thrust of the lament made 'a loan' the most likely choice.
Why? He did not have to die to leave his family 'alone.' He had already deserted them while alive ("And Mamma, some bad talk going around town saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife. And that ain't right.")
Consider: "Where ever Papa laid his hat was his home. And when he died all he left us was alone." "Papa" would beg, borrow or steal to pay his bills." "Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord." - and when he died all he left us was alone (why not A LOAN because he would beg, borrow or steal to pay his bills).
When Papa died he did not leave an estate or legacy - he left a family saddled with his debt.
All he left US was "A LOAN!"
NB1: I dig "Papa was a Rolling Stone." It is powerful pathos wrapped in a compelling musical score. But it is also exemplar of a "montegreen" -or something like that.
NB2: The excerpted lyrics, as I have written them, may not be true to the exact text.

Amazing song, it grooves with more soul then any group can muster today.
You’d swear the Temps raided Sly & the Stones music vault.
You can’t help but hit repeat with this one.

deep in the heart of soul | Reviewer: david rodwell | 10/27/05

dark, soulful innotations. A wonderfully 'put together' sound. Lyrics and music melt into a blend of blue harmony. Pity they don't make them like that anymore.

Solid Stone Platinum | Reviewer: tempted | 7/24/05

Every time I hear the opening music for this song; it sends chills up my spine. The soulful lyrics about a boy wanting to know the truth about his dead father is masterful. It is a mournful tune about a mother who trys to tell her son the truth about his father. The arrangement of the music combined with the great vocals of the temptations is a classic for all time.

Better When Appreciated As "il faut" | Reviewer: The Doctor | 4/20/05

Better when appreciated right after "Ooh!, Effendi" ( 10 CC )and right before "Rock On" ( David Essex ).

It may be in a same CD along with semi-weird stuff such as Captain Beefheart's "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles", "Dark Star", by C.S.N. or even the amazing "Drift Away" ( Dobie Gray ).
