hmm | Reviewer: james | 1/3/09
i agree with the below that its not about god but if it makes you happy i guess lyrics can have different meanings to individual people. Ive only just discovered the intelligent piecing together of the smiths lyrics and it reminds me of joy division. However i think the smiths lyrics can be accepted at face value, as literal as good lyrics get but still quite "deep" if i dare say the word
Young in 1984 | Reviewer: Felix41 | 11/5/08
I'm accepting that lyrics can be interpreted however you like.
Personally I think those from the US in particular are over analysing it. Being 20 years old in Northern England at around the time it was released in 1984, with Maggie Thatcher closing all heavy industry and unemployment in the region being 20%, I can't just see it being about either God or weakness.
I agree with Martin that it's about harsh British working-class reality.
about god? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/2/08
very good song. one of my favorites...about it being about god and about every song being about god... is a fallacy...how could someone write a song about god and not know it? that baffles me...songs are open for interpretation but to say it's about a certain subject and declare it if you're not the writer is just your interpretation...
Music for idiots... | Reviewer: Aphex Twin | 9/17/08
The fact is, Martin is totally right... HOWEVER...
You listen to a song and you make up your own mind what it's about. If you relate to the music, you relate to it. Nuff said.
If you want to think it's about politics, that's fine. If you want to think it's about god... well, you're just fcuking stupid, but that's fine too.
If you like a song as amazing as this one, whatever you get out of it is great. Amazing musicians like Morrisey and The Smiths wrote songs to express their feelings at the time. 20 odd years later if they are remembered for anything but the meaning, it's a piece of history - just as they were feeling at the time.
Music is fantastic.. sit back, listen and enjoy it... whatever you think it's about, if it applies it to your life, just be thankful to the artist for making you feel that way when you listen to it.
um? | Reviewer: her | 9/8/08
this is about God. and our relationship with him. and our yearning as humans to love Him and feel his love also. you just dont know it, neither does morrissey. most songs are about God, and those that arnt are about ... u guess.
Nothing to do with being English | Reviewer: Adam | 7/30/08
No offence ot Maritn but you've misread this song. Yes the smiths were form Manchester and they were working-class but this song is quite simply bout the ack of love and the need for it in somebodies life. I have no idea how being working-class make sit harder to love so y don't u fill me in?
Martin - The English Way | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/30/08
No offense to you yanks but you've completely misread this song, it does come to be expected though, because you can't really appreciate the context of working class english life in cities like Manchester.
This song is about Morrissey's yearning for love that is elevated because of the harsh working-class lives. When you went on a night out it was pretty much the only chance to find love before it was time to get back into the harsh reality of work in the morning; the song is highlighting the despair of being to shy to make much difference.
For the English people, for me it gives mental images of: The Northern Soul clubs, scences in the film 'Kes' and 'A Taste of Honey.'
I'm sorry, as much as you yanks love to yap on about the 'corruptness' of politics, this song is definately NOT about politics.
Great Song | Reviewer: Wangus | 5/20/08
Angie be damned, this song isn't about being weak. It's about being misunderstood. It's far easier to knuckle under to societal pressures than it is to stand up for yourself and who you are, especially when you're young.
This song is for the outcasts, the people who have interests that don't neatly fit into a well understood and accepted clique. For example: It's easy to join a major political party in the US (there are only two of them), you never have to defend it. However if you begin to learn about history you realize both of the majors are completely full of it. It's much harder to explain yourself as a libertarian with green leanings if that is what you really believe. It's hard to be different.
Please accept with gravy and all side trimmings... | Reviewer: FR | 12/9/07
While I can see Angie's point of view in her review below...Angie please accept a deep down 'F*** U' from me on behalf of my little brother, who I lost recently. This was one of his 'songs'. I'm sure you'll understand where I'm coming from as well.
Waa Waa Waa | Reviewer: Angie | 12/2/07
I LOVE the music for this song, but let's be real.....if you identify with this song, you are weak, weak, weak. Quit bellyaching and do something with your lives! WAA WAA WAA.................woe are you!
