The Reviews about HOW SOON IS NOW ? (page 3/ 4)
------ performed by The Smiths

not about clubs at all | Reviewer: Nicky | 11/3/07

This song is working class family blues 101. "I am the son and heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar...I am the son and heir of nothing in particular" This sounds to me like a grown man lashing out at his family for failing to instill in him a sense of vigor...a sense of individuality. It sounds like someone who is defending himself from citicism from people who do not approve of his lifestyle yet live in a glass house because of their unheralded achievements in life. "You shut your mouth! How can you say, 'I go about things the wrong way?' I am human and I need to be loved" He is saying I should not be damned for chosing my course in life but loved simply for being and being only. No one who accomplished less should scorn him. Do we not all deserve to be loved by those who take it upon themselves to create us and raise us?

"When you say it's gonna happen now...when exactly do you mean?" This is a retort to those who say "drink the Kool Aid and tow the line and hard work without question will pay off." This song is about breaking away from conventional wisdom and following your dream....at least that is what I take from it. Thank you Smiths! I adore it!

kind of creepy | Reviewer: cheryllynn | 10/20/07

Notwithstanding the fact that I am a lowly (albeit somewhat educated) American, if you listen closely to the lyrics and the song, it is somewhat creepy sounding. I used to LOVE this song when I was a single woman. I thought I identified with it. A nobody searching for love. Maybe the guy in the song DOES go about things the wrong way. I met my share of men in the clubs who immediately told me they loved me and were so intense that I was scared of them. One guy, after I politely rejected his proclaimed love after knowing me for a few hours, said "Don't do this to me". And proceeded to harass me for days, until I moved. How Soon Is Now is the song that was playing when we locked eyes. Creepy.

Haunting song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/9/07

This is one of the best songs ever written. The lyrics: I am human and I need to be loved/Just like everybody else does" says its all. Everyone wants to be loved, but few find that love.

guitar riff | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/25/07

loved this song way back when , and still gives me goosebumps now , the guitar riff ( john marr) nuff said !! bit of useless info , morrisey used to get his insperation from grave yards .

Smithsonia | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/24/07

It goes further than some of the reviewers think...the narrator is in love with the girl? who keeps putting him off while looking for something better (how familiar is that????)at the disco. His protests are about the fact that he knows she does this and will not find anyone better.

Stereotypes, anyone? | Reviewer: rad9ballmt | 8/6/07

(Re Brendan McKenna's "American and...poorly educated" quip): Wow, that's a sweeping statement. I suppose you're English and your teeth are falling out from bad dental care? (Sheesh....)

How Soon Is Now | Reviewer: Brendan McKenna | 7/27/07

Anthemic, brilliantly narrative and probably about a lot of things - chronic shyness, low self esteem, inability to communicate, a feeling of being an outsider ( may have been Morrissey trying to explore his sexuality especially in proletarian Manchester of 70s and 80s ). The structure of the guitar work is unique and freshly original - apparently it was rarely re created live because of the complexities of the whole song. However Morrissey has played it live since going solo but presumably has top sound and session people helping him to re create the guitar work. Please dont describe it as 'awesome' - that is todays 'nice' Try to use the English language those of you who post messages - I assume you are American and therefore are poorly educated

You do realise this song isn't entirely serious | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/16/07

Morrisey was a great mock writer, the second anon is making something meant to be miserably amusing pretentious and serious, the opposite of what the Smiths were about, for shame,

how soon was then | Reviewer: reflections on life | 6/30/07

its so funny to me to read reviews like "no one knew who they were" or they were first heard on soundtracks to Craft or Charmed. ppl, this was prob the most important band of the 80s! i was in college during the mid 80s - this was my fav band and the fav of everyone i knew.

my fav lyrics from this song are the ones that best capture the feeling of going out but not fitting in:

"So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die"

i'm with another anon | Reviewer: agreed | 6/22/07

Yes, what you said is right. A friend told me this song totally captures who she is in her love life. Now I wanna just go and squeeze her and love her. I didn't know she felt this way, The Smiths said what she couldn't. Now I'm gonna learn this song and sing it to her. Hahahahaha.
