I think what Morrissey tries to show in ths song is an irony over a man who suddenly understands what he has done....The man stands between guilt, regret and sadness. I think the man is a portrayal of a woman-beater... who ACCIDENTLY beats her to coma and in the end death! Think of "Oh Where Oh Where Could My Baby Be" originally by Ricky Nelson and recently redone by Pearl Jam. I've always thought this song was conscientiously written as an extreme example of that tradition.
