"Sorry to say a song is not only the music."

You know, that would be a very valid statement... IF I wouldn't be responding to the statement that Eldrich was a fine songwriter and then instantly praising the song MUSICALLY, like he wrote the damn song! Do the next guy you respond to a favor and read his comment carefully.

And another thing, music is first and formost MUSIC, and that is something Hussey is ingenious at.

The music for Marian was written by Wayne Hussey from the Mission, not Andrew Eldritch. And with that I'll add to you statement, "WAYNE HUSSEY WAS THE FINNEST SONGWRITERS OF HIS GENERATION", and still is nothing less of a musical genious. Personally, I'm glad he left Sisters and got his creative freedom with the Mission

Sorry to say a song is not only the music. Hussey can make great melodies, but is hopeless giving them proper and intelligent lyrics. Eldritch is near to poetry, while Hussey is near to poverty in that field. I am personally glad Eldritch left behind the goth era and became hard rock. The new songs like Crash & Burn, Suzanne, Slept, Arms... are simply perfect.

Hello.
My name is Thomas Drewsen, I'm hoping to form a sisters of mercy jam band somewhere in a not too far future. I was checking out sisters-lyrics when I stumbled upon this page.
Let me just 'begin' with saying that this is gonna be a rather looong review - I find it hard to keep things simple! (so anyone who feels like checking out now should seriously do it! (smiley))
I share a love for the sisters of mercy with future sisters-band mate Jacob Schausen (we're both from Denmark) - and we particularly love the song 'Heartland' (from 'some girls wander by mistake'), and we both find 'first and last and always' to be their (his) best album. We both slightly dislike (yet still like of course) 'Floodland' for it's pop-sound (think I read somewhere that 'This corrosion' was a club-hit). I personally prefer the 'Vision thing' album to 'floodland' - some great stuff there, incl. the title song, 'vision thing' (although it gets you thinking about ZZ Top doesn't it (nothing too wrong about ol' ZZ, though)?), and also a great song like 'Ribbons' and the haunting 'something Fast'.
Anyway! 'back' to 'Marian', the song in question here (sorryyyy):
It's one of my five favourites from the 'first and last and always' album, which include in chronological order:
'black planet', 'marian', 'first and last and always',
'nine while nine', and 'some kind of stranger'. I would probably personally rank them as follows:
1. 'some kind of stranger'
2. 'first and last and always'
3. 'nine while nine'
4./5. then I dunno whether to put 'marian' or 'black planet' in the fourth place.
so 'marian' is not my favourite song of the album, but still far superior to much of the stuff on 'floodland' ('popland', heehee! One 'floódland' favourite of mine, though, is 'driven like the snow' in which Eldritch sings one or two lines from 'nine while nine'. And also I find it hard to truly dislike songs like 'this corrosion' and 'lucretia')
So, now, I've dunnit! I've written several thousand words about 'marian' but limited the space actually spend on a 'marian' review to next to nothing. The things is, though, that I find it so interesting to speak about one of my alltime favourite bands, and thereby to limit my words.
If anyone actually had the patience to listen to me babbling, I would be truly honoured to hear from you on this page!

Eldritch forever!!!

a time of dark splendour in my life. for a few months i lived through a period of sparkling blackness to which this song takes me back every time i listen. eldritch was such a class act. remember him in his bone-white suit on totp singing 'dominion'? glorious.

meanwhile the mission were flouncing around in sad pseudo-gothadelic purple and black - talk about mac-goth.

i miss you som. so much has been exposed as cheesy and silly by time and reality, but not _you_.

DARK CLASS | Reviewer: alan tizzard | 11/28/07

PROBABLY WAS THEIR FINEST HOUR A BRILLIANT DEBUT ALBUM FROM A UNIQUE SOUNDING OUTFIT.THIS SOUND RATES AMONG THE ELITE OF THE GOTHIC GENERATION ALONGSIDE A FOREST BY THE CURE ,IT IS SUCH A SHAME THAT THE BAND WAS DESTROYED BY EGO,S BECAUSE ANDREW ELDRITCH WAS FOR ME ONE THE FINEST SONGWRITERS OF HIS GENERATION.MARIAN MUSICALLY WAS SUCH A HAUNTING SOUND I LOVE IT!
