The Shins display vocal prowess | Reviewer: Larry | 2/15/07
You look back, way back in musical history for a rock-era group with true musical AND vocal talent. And you find the list is short. Pick out your favorite classic rock band and ask yourself if they really had vocal talent. The Shins have such talent and display it here with mounds of smooth, melodic doses. Ear candy aside, The Shins are polished at this point in their musical careers and don't come to grandstand. Pantom Limb is almost haunting yet powerful and pleasing a song as you will hear regardless of the era you compare it to. This tune holds up and elevates The Shins to a new level among some impressive company in popular music history. How The Shins perform this polished and pleasing melody and still appeal to their fans who insist on a musical edge and hip sophistication is quite an accomplishment.
Tuneful, impressive! | Reviewer: *Isabelle* | 2/21/07
I heard this song just this morning on MusicSpace (the television radio) and I fell in love with it. I've always loved the Shins and I've seen them in concert twice, both times before they came to general publics attention. (Thanks to Garden State... good movie, by the way!) This song is classic Shins and I loveeeddd it!!!
The New Smiths | Reviewer: Rich | 12/13/06
When I met the lead singer for the Shins back in '03 - we were back stage at the Bottleneck in Lawrence,KS. I was up there (were I wasn't supposed to be) swiging their beer (Red Stripe) for them as fast as I could. Good old Jimmy Mercer and myself (wearing my "the Queen is Dead" T-shirt). He wrote this song about me - Phantom Limb. These guys were sooo cool - just hanging out. I was the only one that did a stage dive that night - to one of their slower songs - Girl on the wing - I think it was. This one sounds more influenced by Morrissey circa '95.
Thank you James. I've got some great photos of that evening!!! I love that others love you as much as I do.
