I've always believed that the music comes first. You can have the most eloquent, sophisticated lyrics written - if the music aint't there in the first place, forget it. This is one of those songs that just mesmerizes me musically - I think it's awesome from that standpoint. The lyrics however are wierd indeed - hard to figure just what is being said or what the writer wants us to "see" - I'm somewhat of a stickler for detail so I'll study the words and try to make some sense... Meanwhile, they can keep on making music like this and I won't complain. It should be interesting to see how they grow upon us - I think we're in for a treat! Peter Noon and The Beatles helped write the popular rulebook on this type of tune in the early 1960's, and its been updated and reworked to suit the artist's tastes and available tech since then by anyone from Fleetwood Mac to The Pretenders, The Smiths, Luna, and even Swervedriver (Go listen to "These Times"). Its odd someone would even use the Connells as a point of reference for this style of song.
