Beautiful Song | Reviewer: Matt | 10/26/09

This is one of my favorite songs. It is so well written. I interpret the song as a sad song. The guy is longing to be with a girl he use to be with. In different metaphors and what not he essentially says he be the happiest guy ever if he was given another shot by his ex. Lovely song that I could listen to over-and-over again.

this is one of my favorite songs as far as lyrics go, really quite beautifully written. i think its kind of a sad song, talking to a girl he used to be with but isn't anymore, and can't help thinking of what might of been, but never could be.

in the first part he's saying, somewhat sarcastically and maybe bitterly, how he's not happy where he is in his life now and would rather be back in blind love like when they started going out.

then the chorus, saying if she would have wanted to be with him, he'd do anything, and wouldn't even care about being a fool (king of the eyesores), would proudly dance about for all to see as long as they're happy.

the next part is about how reality hit him. things start to take on a "new" meaning, you notice things, "the dirt in your fries" could be an analogy to how when your a child, you can drop food on the ground and pick it up and eat it without thinking about it (all a metaphor of course), then you grow out of it and notice all the bad things, and after this the only thing left is to get old and die. and this change hit him abruptly (bull through the hall). he's regretting even telling her this but he doesn't know what else to do, kind of depressed.

chorus again

then in the bakers thumbs part it refers back to "dawn", the turning point. like when people hit this change and the innocence and sincerity is gone, they end up getting hurt, and often by something close to them, and it never really heals. also it kind of shows a change in his mood to being kind of bitter about losing her.

then finally i think he's talking about how he's seen that she's getting on with her life and is happy again, and he doesn't know if he can do the same. he's still messed up from it all, still can't trust or find any courage (flaming field), and doesn't know if he's capable of picking himself back up (refine). and then it ends with one last what if.

haha wow that ended up being long. anyways it's just one way to interpret it. tried not to miss anything.

new slang... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/26/09

I agree with the last review that this song is far from optimistic, moreso focused on the stasis and lack of movement for mankind during life in general.
However I doubt the author is considering that in detail here, like most songwriters they are most likely to be drawing ideas from there own personal experiences. So I think the song can be read either pessimistically or optimistically depending on how the listener is actually feeling a that point in time. The song can be a love song talking of how relationships can mend your life or as the world being a living hell for us all to endure, yay for hell on earth!

Personally I love this song and the album 'Oh, Inverted World' and think we should all agree 'Garden State' kicks ass (watch it if you haven't!!!), and we should all hail Zach Braff as our God and make yearly sacrifices to appease him. :)

what i think | Reviewer: jake | 4/26/09

haha i think everyone is being way to optimistic about this song having some sort of redeeming message. Basically, this song is saying that life is very ordinary, plain, and to an extent, meaningless. We seek intrigue, we seek something that says that our lives are special, and that we weren't arbitrarily placed in this world. We are all bakers at dawn, trying to get a competitive edge, turn out something new, and original and inventive. However, we're indistinguishable, life is a simple process of wasting away, bleeding into our buns (our life's work) and with nothing meaningful or distinguishable to show for it. His love for the girl i dont think should be taken as literally a romantic relationship, i think hes talking about his love for life, or western culture, and how it slowly withers away little by little. How he notices the "dirt in the fries" the ugly lining around our supposedly golden picture of existence. One should also notice his tone of voice and how it doesnt change throughout the entire song. There is no verse which is emphasized, and he has a very resigned, effortless vibe, which conveys a sense that there is nothing new in western culture, no high, or low point in life. It reminds me of the "hollow men" in many ways. We die "old and bony" not valiantly or intriguingly, and how the universe ends not with a bang, but with a whimper.

"New Slang" i feel conveys the idea, that we are constantly trying to reinvent ourselves as a culture. But the reality is that we are simply changing the words, changing the superficial lens with which we view ourselves, and because this process is inherently arbitrary, it is inherently meaningless. Thus, there is nothing new in western culture, just echoes and re-definied versions of the same thing. He is "too dumb to refine". we are all "too dumb to refine". Any search for originality is simply "new slang"

I love the shins, and this song is my current favorite from the album "Oh, inverted world". There were some parts of the lyrics that I didn't quite understand, but now that I've read the comments here I get most of it. Thanks for makig it all clearer for me :)
However, I noticed that in the lyrics that are on the CD cover, it says "eyesores" and not "azores".

I haven't seen "Garden state" yet, but I will as soon as I have the time, as I've heard so much about it.

wow. | Reviewer: the guy who cooks your food | 12/10/08

the songs about how the if the girl would of just tried more, than both of them would of lived happier.

verse one- says how he's now cursing the entire relationship because of what it's become.
he's lost what he had at the beginning of the relationship.
he's lost mindless love.

verse two-he's saying sarcastically that he hopes everything goes right for her.
he doesnt really mean it.
and even though she treated him like shit, he cant help but call her and get back together because hes lonely and nobody is there.

verse three- he's saying that you have to take a risk to be happy. if the bakers didnt bake their bread because they have the chance to cut their thumbs then nobody would ever have bread. if your ever going to be anything you have to take the risk.and hes also saying that he thinks he will never attain the happy life he dreamed of.
he places some blame on himself that things went so bad.he says that he needs to learn to refine himself and learn to trust people again and he also needs to learn to take a risk sometimes. *flaming fields being an analogy to his bravery which he lacks.*

chorus and last two lines- if only she would of treated him better and tried harder they could of lived happy for the rest of their lives.
but she didnt. he also feels if he were better at trusting and being strong and brave then maybe she would of tried.

but thats just what it means to me. its really open to interperation.

perfect | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/9/08

I have never been so touched by a movie like I was after I watched Garden State. I can say that to date, it is the most beautiful, inspirational movie I have seen. As for The Shins, I can't even begin to rave about my love for them. AHHH!!!!!!!! I listen to each song on repeat and never once have I gotten sick of any song! LOVE!

hands down | Reviewer: Sarah | 1/2/08

i first heard this song when i was about 9 or 10 years old (i'm only 15) and it has cause The Shins to always be my favorite band. I have always loved this song and in the part in garden state when natalie portman says, "you've gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life" i completely agree. This song is perfect for that scene.

this song and 'the past and the pending' are definitely one of my favorites

duffman says | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/21/07

I just saw the movie and thought it was really quite amazing. I was touched and smiled with goose bumps when he shouts from on top of the construction equipment into the infinite abyss. I think people can really identify with the movie which is mixed with subtle humor that makes it so great. I thought, I don't know what's out here in my life in my infinite abyss, but I know I am here and that feels good. Dare to do, take a risk, speak what's on your mind. Do what you can today don't save it for tomorrow.
I listen to this song on repeat usually and I will get some of their other cds. Whoever spoke of the baker verse I think was right on point and I really like the analogy. Life is not always a smooth ride, sometimes there's dirt in your fries. But I think that's the really beauty of life and relationships in particular. If you can battle through the hard times, then the good times are that much sweeter. If you are in the position like the "I" persona of this song say what's on your heart to that special someone and you know what's the worst that can happen. The situation either is what you want or not. And that's ok. If it works out your set and if it doesn't you roll your shoulders back and explore a different part of the abyss because there's a really really big world out there.
Life is half full and half empty with or without someone in your life. It's all relative to what you choose to believe. But I must say when your with someone who you really like, what the glass of your life is filled with is something different then before. I think it's sweeter, but at the same time you can't let a bitter situation and hard times make you loose sight of that. Because then you end up back where you were before and that's lonely.
Communicate that's all you can do
if you took to me like
a gull takes to the wind
well i'd jump from my tree
and i'd dance...
