Every time I listen to this song I pick up new things relating to the theme/lyrics. Easily the best song on "Wincing the Night Away", although It is very similar to the other songs on the album. The guitar goes perfectly with the lyrics and I absolutely love the song. :)

A long interpretation... | Reviewer: Matt M | 4/16/09

Here is what I drew from the song:

The comet features as the course of life in the song appearing from the void to a particular though, uncertain destination. Yet a comet is celestial and its path was put in motion long ago so one is merely along for the ride conveying a sense of hopelessness with this idea. A man, the protagonist, is pulled along and his burgeoning unhappiness is revealed. The source seems to be a fleeting sense of worth as he can only attain transient moments of it.

There is a reluctant moment of realization in the third verse when the man recognizes his current life as only a façade. Despite all the effort and time spent until this point it amounts to nothing as it losses its meaning. There is again this fleeting sense of worth but now it applies to everything we built to support ourselves, our activities, belongings, responsibilities things that allowed us to invent our own worth but never delivered anything that brought happiness.

The chorus tells the darkest aspect of the protagonist’s despair. There is a sense of inevitable hopelessness that gains on him everyday and he is keenly aware that he is losing all chance of ever find whatever his heart is telling him he needs so badly.

The burning of sage refers to an old practice to keep away malevolent forces and in this way the man separates himself from what was his life and looks back to find where his errors lie. There emerge so many excuses to lay failure upon but none bring him closer to finding something to believe in. Even turning to what may seem important to others casts a feeling that it is equally artificial. The comet sheathed in beauty is only a frozen transience and inevitability it reveals itself as little more than a falling stone. This may indicate the death of the protagonist for when the comet has become a stone it is assumed to have come to an end of its journey. The chorus repeats as if only to remind that to the very end happiness was still just a distant thought.

The song is a work of art. Even though the lyrics are hard to understand, I can still relate to them. The music is simple and peaceful; It goes perfectly along with the vocals. Over all its a great song.

Amazing. The first time i heard it i was in awe, and i've loved the song since. The music is eerie, but somehow familiar, i can't describe it. It's just good.
