The song was evidently originally written about a girl who he no longer loved but knew she still felt love for him and he knew that she needed him, but he feels it has damaged their relationship as friends. However by the time it was recorded in it's final version it had obviously come to mean alot more and there is a weird double entendre that also captures Pete and Carl's fractured relationship in this rendition.
