It's not about Carl.. i read that book Petes mum wrote about him. In it she talks about how touched and impressed she was by this song Pete wrote. Pete had phoned her up and asked her to listen to this song he had just written called "i no longer hear the music" he said it had written for a girl he was breaking up with.
Meaning | Reviewer: Luke | 9/26/2008
The song is definitely about a relationship when you lose 'that' feeling. It's not about Pete and Carl's relationship breaking down. The lyrics are clear enough but I have also read Jackie Doherty's book which confims it!

Amazing Song | Reviewer: Vino | 8/9/2008
This song is such a beautiful balance of everything a song writer dreams to be able to do. And the guitars as in all Libertines songs contrast perfectly. The song was evidently originally written about a girl who he no longer loved but knew she still felt love for him and he knew that she needed him, but he feels it has damaged their relationship as friends. However by the time it was recorded in it's final version it had obviously come to mean alot more and there is a weird double entendre that also captures Pete and Carl's fractured relationship in this rendition. Sheer brilliance.
a modern masterpiece | Reviewer: keith | 7/22/2008
This song is one of the libertines best, its a pity it was written about their demise.
The lyrics are quite obviously written to the band and ultimately carl, as they were fighting all the time, and pete wanted carl to forgive him.
The rest of the song tells of his relationship with carl, and how it is coming to an end.

the man don't love the girl anymore i am sure..
from the lyric it tells ,the man has somehow disappointed about the fact that the girl is actually not the kind of girl he had fell in love with ...and the song doesn't focus on the feeling of the girl so it's hard to know whether or not the girl realize that...whatever the song is about...the vibe it give out is wonderful..i love it
great music | Reviewer: magarel | 2/21/2008
Actualy I think this song is about a boy who was in love with a girl but he no longer is. he fells sorry because he know that he loved her and she still loves him.
"And alarm bells ring
when you say your heart still sings
when you're with me.
Won't you please forgive me?
But I no longer hear the music
Oh no no no no no
"
this are the key lyrics to understand this great song. I prefer this song when pete is singing it alone with an acoustic guitar, it's more... heartbreaking.
poor guy. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/9/2008
this song seems to me the story of a guy who's crazy about a girl, but she doesn't feel quite the same about him. the two go to a club, and as they're dancing he gets an idea of what's happening, and when the lights come back on he looks around and realises she's gone home with someone else.
poor guy.

yum yum | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/9/2008
I thought it was more like when your with someone and you kinda lose that loving feeling and things are different, but the other person doesn't feel it.
Thats the vibe I took away from it...'cos its sad when you think your going to feel the same way about a person forever but things change..
