I loved this song so much, till i had a visit from my girlfriend the other nite tellin me she wants to be with one of my best mates. everything he describes in the song was the same. i not only lost a friend but a girlfriend too.

This song was all over the radio last fall when my Dad passed away from cancer. It is most pertinent to me because of the line-"...I lost a friend..." I lost my best friend that day.

I think everyone sees this song in a different way based on their life experiences. It sounds to me like it has to do with a suicidal friend. But when I hear it I think of my cat that got lost after he got out of the house and then was either killed by a wild animal or hit by a car or something. You can't help but feeling guilty like there was something you could have done to stop what happened but when it comes to the truth nothing can stop fate.

This song reminds me of my brother who I lost in Aug 06. I would have stayed up all night, had I known how to save his life..I lost a friend!!

I think this song matches perfectly with my own life.
me as the one who's sad and thinks of suicide, and my X-girlfriend as the savier.
she knew that if she broke up with me, that i would try suicide, so she stayed up all night with me and talked me out of it.

its a bit freaky because, that day was exactly like the song. everything! even the choice matched perfectly, (i chose to admit to everything).
and she showed me the song.

I agree with Ryan about regrets,and blame, we shouldn't give loneliness a chance, because the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone is to feel empty inside, suicide is not the best way out, but when you feel that way, there's nothing left. So if you think a friend of yours is in trouble help him/her, listen, and support him/her you don't know how long is gonna be in your life.

This is a great song it tells me no one is perfict! God helps you through relly bad times!

The singer goes to see a friend (he) to confront him about something he disagrees with, or has an issue with, and can't agree with him about it because of the singer's own set of principles. The singer believes the friend is throwing his life away. The singer is sad because he lost a friend, and is divided between his problem with the issue and the friend. The friend decides not to want to work it out, and the singer decides not to confront the issue as the friend has basically said that he's not the same person any more. Sad song, I've been in the same place with a friend, and you end up going your separate ways, sometimes a small matter, sometimes greater.

I thought was about a girl being suicidly. Which why it would be called "How to save a life" and the phrase "And I would have stayed up with you all night, Had I known how to save a life" but one of my friends and told me he thought it was talking about the girl starting to like her friend, he didn't know how to react, so the friendship,(being called "life") split apart. Ether way I love this song!!

I agree that is song is about someone dieing and it is so sad that they couldn't help. It song is sad yet you can't help but sing along no matter what the situation. Well i can't.

I think the song is about a friend (not a girl btw, he sings about a HE) that got depressed and want to commit suicide. He want to talk to him but not just talking but that that person realy listend and hears him (depressed people mostly don't listend) thats why he sings: And you begin to wonder why you came (why do you try? he wont listend anyway).

Then the chorus: he ask himself where he did go wrong, what happend that his friend turned this depressed? When his friend got so bitter, he lost him. He would stay up with that friend all night if he wish how to save his life.

Again the fact that he wants his friend to listend to him this part comes in: and pray to god he hears you. Its very hard to get trough someone thats depressed (the: try to get past his defence part)

When his friend got pissed (when he starts to raise his foice) and all defensife, he gave him one last choise, the choise to change or to end the friendship I think. When he realize (admids) that he was wrong and wants to change its cool, when he don't (which I think he didnt if I look at the song) he begin to wonder why he came (why he even tried)

In the end, he wanted to help but didnt know how (he would have stayed up all night if he had known how to save a life). I guess if this song is a lyric based on a true story, the guy commited suicide. Or not and then he saved him from it ;)
