The Reviews about Bad Habit (page 1/ 3)
------ performed by The Dresden Dolls

I love this!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/30/09

I also assumed this song was about self harm... Biting nails huh? Ive noticed that most of Amandas songs have double meanings tho... Nonetheless, I love it. I have this bad habit too so its comforting.

I Get All My Bad Habits From Watching You | Reviewer: L | 4/13/09

Well, let's try and ignore the fact that I've just used lyrics from a different song as my title (I've been listening to that particular song for a couple of days and it seems to fit at the moment), and go into my comment =].

I'm 17, just to let you all know. It really doesn't matter, but hey - age seems to be a big factor in most of the comments written. Oh - and to that 11 year old grammar freak ... I think I'm in love. Not in the creepy pedophilia way, just ... well, I'm a grammar freak too! I get so annoyed when people write comments and insult people all the while making themselves look like complete idiots because they suck at grammar. So kudos to you ^_^.

And this song ... It may not be about cutting, but people who have experienced it are going to interpret it that way, and people who bite the skin around their nails will interpret it in relation to that. Art is all about interpretation ^_^. I myself relate it to self mutilation (I'm not 'emo' at all, just to let you know ... and I was also 11 when I started that too, so really age has nothing to do with it - everyone has their reasons ... although I couldn't really find a reason -__-. To this day I'm not sure what it was that made me wake up some days and just be completely down and disconnected. I'd like to point out that I'm 7 months 'clean' though!) ... geez, long bracket. I apologise. I like the 'anonymous' factor of this commenting thing ^_^.

I've always love the Amanda's lyrics, and this song is no exception =].

SOME RANDOM SNOB SAID:

"as for that eleven year old, you're just plain emo! and don't express your love for a royal class music such as this if you don't even understand it. i suppose with you're brain capacity i should put it this way, shut the hell up!"

Lovely. I am sorry that we cannot all be as "royal class" as you are you little *insertbadwordhere* . Way to go, insult the "emo" eleven-year-olds brain capacity, with people like you why does anyone even bother offer their opinion?
If you fail to realize how a preteen could have such good taste I wonder what kind of eleven-year-old you were? Still in diapers and watching barney, perhaps?

*being a grammar nerd i cannot help but notice your misuse of the word "you're", being the 'o incredibly smart and royal class person that you are.*

a hormone-fueled rant on all you snobby old people | Reviewer: i am emoteen, hear me roar | 2/16/09

Just reading the reviews...personally I love this song, but being 13 I guess that it is too COMPLICATED for me to understand, way over my head.

I started listening to the Dresden Dolls when I was 11, if you have problems with preteens listening to something that is not the popular crap off the radio then you obviously think that everyone was just as stupid a teenager as you were. Hey, maybe you wouldn't of understood this song as an 11 year old and maybe some other 11 year olds DO understand it, (isnt that an amazing idea!) you don't have to be so snobby about it.

I bet you are the same people that think Coin Operated Boy is about a sex toy and think that it is WAY too mature a topic for 11 year olds.
Lots of people misunderstand this song, no matter how old they are.

Let the young un's have their crappy pop music...

*just letting my emo teen spirit out on yall...run and hide, everyone! its the emooooooooooooooooooteeeeeeeeeen*

Come On People | Reviewer: Schplynthia | 5/19/08

I don't usually post on these things but some of the responses I'm reading are really making me angry.
This song is not about cutting yourself...nor is it even melodramatic when you really THINK about it. It is about self-destruction. Everyone self-destructs. Everyone does something to numb themselves, whether it is cutting, biting your nails, singing until your throat is sore, drugs, alcohol, sex, or even watching TV. We all do something to distract ourselves from real life. This song is about the fact that we live in a self-destructive society that encourages self-destruction on an individual level. We live in a society in which it is necessary for us to turn ourselves off in order to function. We are surrounded by a media that constantly tells us that we are not good enough.
For the love of god, if someone feels bad enough about themselves to commit physical self-harm, have a bit of empathy and do not add to their troubles by telling them once more that they are stupid for doing so...I'm sure they already know it.

Personally, I'll be choosing the literal interpretation... | Reviewer: Georgiana | 11/27/07

Damn, I've just read the reviews pointing out that it's NOT expressly about self-harm.

Obviously, I'm really really glad to hear that Amanda isn't in that state herself, but...

...I was kind of hoping someone had finally written a GOOD song about self-harm! One that really sums up what it's like. There's so many frankly bloody awful ones out there that are so personal, they only make sense to the person writing them. They're usually melodramatic, unitelligent and largely incoherent and ok, they probably helped the person writing to let out a lot of their feelings - but they're AWFUL to listen to!

So...I think personally I'm going to choose to continue to interpret them that way, because although I wish I didn't know any self-harmers and self-harm didn't exist, it still undeniably DOES and I need a song that helps me articulate and deal with it.

(And just for the record, I'm a 22-year old perfectly normal-looking Scottish University student. People from ALL walks of life have contact with self-harm, you know.)

Wow. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/9/07

When I first heard the song, I presumed it was relating to self-harm.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good song, but at the same time, it's a little melodramatic isn't it? Making such a big issue of biting your nails?

Also, if you're all so sophisticated, you will already be aware that "emo" doesn't mean pre-pubescent girls who cut themselves because daddy didn't buy them the bike they wanted.

I would explain what it really is, but I'm obviously not sophisticated enough to enjoy a 3 minute melodrama, or to be aware of music scenes that began before my time.

Sorry for not being a 30 something who spends their life at a computer.

la la la la la | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/7/07

what is the world coming to when 11/12 year olds endulge in self-harm?
they have barely hit puberty....
and is what with people flipping out over what an eleven year old interperets? its different for everyone! just because Amanda wrote this about biting her skin around her nails, doesn't mean its just about that issue!
mean people suck.

Ain't that a kick in the head? | Reviewer: Hey there - it's me! | 10/10/07

Even though this has been going on for a long time now, I must say that it is a pity to think that just because a person is 11-years-old means that they cannot get into music like this. I would much rather an 11-year-old get into this original music rather than something trashy and meaningless.
Just because they have taste does not make them "emo".
We all have bad habits, and this song fits my feelings to a T when I catch myself in the act - and probably everyone else's, too.

I probably could say more, but I am also probably not going to drop by here again.
I just thought I might put my thoughts in - since they did not want to go anywhere else.
