The Dresden Dolls Companion | Reviewer: cynicalsarcasm | 8/4/07

"We've gotten plenty of Hate Mail from Angry Parents about this one . . . and most of the fans who love this song assume that it is about taking a blade to your arm. It's not, exactly. When I wrote it I realized how easy to misinterpret it would be, and I deliberately let the line blur. I do this with a lot of lyrics. Lots of songwriters do. I may never have taken a razor to my wrist of other body part, but I certainly witnessed a lot of that firsthand within my circle od self-destructive friends, and I realated the urge to harm oneself with my own compulsion to tear the skin off around my cuticles with my teeth." ---The Dresden Dolls Companion, pg 64.

Amanda allows the listener to interpret what the song is about and allows the listener to relate it to his or her own life. Many songwriters, poets, etc. choose to do the same thing. Yes, her initial inspiration may have been biting skin off her fingers. However, the final result was a piece of art. Art is to be interpreted by the audience. A clear-cut piece is not one that is of worth. Because she allowed the line to blur, this song can relate to anyone from any walk of life, which is what makes it an amazing piece. Stop attacking someone for not getting the literal translation and allow them to see this piece in its purest form.

So, I never actually realized that this song was about this particular habit. It's not totally self-destructive though, is it? Because I do it all the time, until the point at which it starts bleeding. Call it a disorder if you like, I also chew my nails, and I suppose thats how it kinda started. I do it when I'm nervous or anxious or depressed, or even excited sometimes.
But, review wise- very good song!

The general feeling of the song... | Reviewer: Annie Anatomy | 7/3/07

As a person studying to be a musicologist i can tell you that the meaning of the song is just as important as the reactions that the song illicits in its listners.

Mel, you have a valid point of veiw because its your point of veiw- you are feeling the music and that is what art is for: to create feeling.

Some of you need to chill out, you are picking on an 11 year old with a good taste in music, well done- you have attacked a child whos only crime was liking a good band.

Sad, sad, sad.

Different opinions | Reviewer: Rachel | 6/24/07

With each of their songs, there’s always a layer of complicacy, even if the songs meaning is very simple. With this song, once you look at the lyrics properly it does have variable meanings, which is why I enjoy it so much. I agree that you shouldn’t ignore someone’s opinion, no matter what age they are. The song does point out about our world, how shallow and fake we've become, and how we don’t even notice when someone’s self harming. But then I feel at the end she’s looking at herself and how she’s been putting herself above it all, looking down on people, making her just the same. Well that’s just my take on it. This was without knowing the song was actually about her biting the skin around her nails.

uh | Reviewer: rarr | 6/23/07

just because someone hadn't actually gone to the website and read that amanda picks the skin off aruond her fingers or whatever. does not make them an emo 11 year old. it could definently be interpreted as being about cutting you pompous dickhead.

you stupid, ignorant, nasty people | Reviewer: lucie | 6/20/07

why as soon as they pick out something wrong or a defect in someone they pounce on the and rip them apart?

honestly guys, leave that little kid alone. shes didnt deserve any of the stuff you said.

it might be news to you, just "just 11 yr olds" can have huge destructive issues of their own. only fools judge by age.

and in the end music is music. it dosnt matter what others listen to, as long as you like *your* music, then that should be enough. dont slam other people for their likes. because, like all of you have done, you will end up looking ignorant, untolerant and rude.

kudos to the kind ones.

Bad habit | Reviewer: drmaqwn | 6/18/07

it is indeed a bad habit in which i myself had to stop doing. The lyrics really breathe and are so true.

sophisticated you say? | Reviewer: Snowowl | 6/10/07

The beautiful thing about music is that each can interpretate the meaning in his or her own way (usually people try to indentify music with the things they've gone through or going through in their life). There is absolutely NO need to start bashing eachothers opinions about this. And there is also no need to pretend that you're better/more 'sophisticated' then others because you think your intepretation is smehow 'better' or 'more accurate' then the one of an eleven year old. Also shows how much 'sophisticated' you all are when you ridicule an ELEVEN YEAR OLD...

youth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/26/07

Good on the eleven year old for listening to decent music. When I was eleven I was just starting to embrace the apparent wonders that were Avril Lavigne and Busted. Still if I was 11 when they were around anyone with decent maths can workout im hardly anywhere near my twenties yet so I dont suppose I can claim to being that superior in musical taste. Yey for the little people.
