Insomnia | Reviewer: Rose | 10/2/09
I'm guessing it's about someone with insomnia who believes they are absolutely fine and their lack of sleep is not a bad thing. I was like this for a while following some bad news. Of course, lack of sleep can easily kill you, because you'll be in a lot more danger if you're not alert, you could fall asleep while driving or something, or not be careful while crossing a road or using machinery.

dude, this song is from Funeral, not One World. that might be a collection. it totally fits in with the proto-nostalgic look that the album Funeral takes at childhood in general. the song is about when we are kids the only way we can live our dreams is through sleep, but we cannot continue to do that as we age
erm | Reviewer: Katie | 4/18/09
i love this song. i think i get what its about. its obviously against sleep, and i think it is basically talking about how sleep is not what you should be doing. live the life you have, not the one you dream of. or like how sleep is not easy when you are living the life of your dreams
Canada's top 49 | Reviewer: Kate | 1/15/09
This song was put in as a nomination for CBC's Canada's top 49 most Canadian songs. I don't really see how this song is Canadian though. I know they're from Montreal or something like that, but I don't see the relation.
lies... | Reviewer: ampm | 12/13/08
I think this song is about people whom live their
dreams only in sleep - "People try and hide the light / underneath the covers", because they are afraid.
afraid from what? I guess from society, family... themselves. I dont know, its really depending.
anyway, ace song and band (and forgive my bad english).
i don't know what this song means, but | Reviewer: anonymous | 11/11/08
I always thought it was about the lies parents tell their children. However, this song can't be about how it's a lie that without sleep you'll die, because that's very true. Ever hear of fatal familial insomnia? Google it, or better yet, check out the video: "the man who never slept" on youtube. People CAN die because of lack of sleep. Michael Corke did.

I love these comments. I think I lot of brain cells were killed while thinking about these interpretations. Wait... it doesn't kill brain cells... just a myth! It's made up to "scare your son, scare your daughter."
OMFG! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/21/08
If you listen to the album One World, it features the band members TELLING YOU what the freaking song is about! It is about THE LIE that everyone needs SLEEP to SURVIVE. That's it. Very simply, the singer said he believed that it is fine to live without sleep. He said that after 3 days of sleep he got his 'second wind' and stopped needing sleep. "I haven't slept since!" he said.
That was the 1st time I heard Arcade Fire, off the One World album that also features Thievery Corp. and Whitey.
It is really cool to read everyone's interpretations. I'm sort-of jealous I never got the chance to make up my own personal meaning!
one of the poorer lyrics of their music | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/29/08
I believe the lyrics to this songs, as a whole, are a little weak if so many different interpretations can be validly made. It's okay for poetry/lyrics to be ambiguous, but not to the point where no one can really know what they are saying.
Life's cruel expectations | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/11/08
To me, this song talks about an internal debate between what someone wants or dreams of doing vs. what they believe they are expected to do. Often times, life's decisions are made based solely on pleasing others (i.e. family) and what they believe they are supposed to do based on the view of their place in society. Hence, the only place we can get away from all that and be who we truly want to be, is when we sleep, where dreams and "misbehavior" are acceptable.
It's sort of like the student in med school who's always dreamed of becoming a painter. But he represses that because his family instills the idea that it is the best thing for him to become a doctor, and he believes that it's the most practical way for him to upkeep his perception of his place in society. So, he represses his natural tendencies and love of painting and tells himself that submitting to what he perceives as life's expectations isn't all that bad. So, "lies" refers to both his true passion of paiting (only acceptable while sleeping), as well as the notion that being a doctor is ok.
Pretty depressing, but pretty common.
