The Reviews about Rebellion (Lies) (page 3/ 4)
------ performed by The Arcade Fire
rugby club? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/4/07
an intriguing image hiding a rugby club underneath the covers - did they sing this once somewhere? (England presumably) I do not hear it on the CD
Alternative interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/4/07
What I get from the song is a little different than SL's interpretation (though I can see his reasoning). I took the opening verses to mean that the "sleeping in, giving in" part is what's supposed to kill you faster than a lack of water. Our culture is always driving us forward, pushing us to always be on the search for an "upgrade". But that is the lie that's told to us. You can sleep and dream about having all the things you can never truly achieve, but you have to remember that your dreams really are just lies that you tell yourself (and we all want things we can't always have). It's a dreadfully depressing interpretation of it, I know.
Sexuality and guilt -- Lies! Lies! | Reviewer: SL | 3/4/07
Children in Western societies are taught from an early age to be fearful of their sexuality ("Scare your son, scare your daughter.") They are taught that sex is sinful ("Sleeping is giving in, no matter what the time is.") They have things like STDs drilled into their heads, and it certainly seems like any time you hear about sex in high school is in connection with some kind of disease ("People say that you'll die, faster than without water.")
That's the reason that people live their sexuality in shame ("People try to hide the night/underneath the covers" and "Come on hide your lover/underneath the covers").
But, this sense of shame and guilt cannot survive serious questioning--the best way to expose a groundless dogma is by exposing it to the light of truth ("But we know it's just a lie" and "Here's the sun, it's alright! Here's the moon, it's alright!").
Nonetheless the sense of guilt and shame lingers and infects the way men and women relate to one another ("Come on baby in our dreams/we can live our misbehaviour").
So sexuality is always a site of tension between the lovers and each other, the lovers and their guilt. The guilt comes from a lie, but the guilt also causes lies, causes us to think of our sexuality as misbehaviour, but at once also causes us to misbehave, every time we close our eyes. That explains the antiphon: "Lies! Lies!"
At the Judson concert, William says to the audience at the end of this song, "You've been lied to!" And we have--we are all victims of this lie.
Nothing comparable | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/1/07
Nothing I have ever heard deals with this subject matter in a more honest, raw, and perfectly done way. Its cascade of conflicting, rollercoaster emotions reflects personal experience. What do I mean?
When I was maybe five or six, I was in a bad car accident with my mom and my little sister. It was all over the newspapers, and the other driver died in it. I was fine. My little sister was fine. My mom was sent to the hospital.
I remember being brought to her in the hospital and seeing the red scratches on her face where glass had implanted into her face, and the doctors had removed it. And I was afraid to approach, fearing how delicate my mom looked. Eventually, they let me crawl into bed with her, holding her underneath the covers, and I wasn't sure everything was going to be alright.
In the making of this album, both lead singers lost parents. Listen to it with this perspective in mind, reflect upon losing your parents, and all of it will make perfect sense.
It's pretty good | Reviewer: Multifire | 2/20/07
Even I will admit the song is good and the band is not that bad, I sort of have trouble interpreting it though, I guess you have to figure out for yourself what it truely means, it defently helps revive rock.

A truly brilliant song. I first heard it on BBC's Match of the Day. At the begining of every month there is a goal of the month competion from the best goals of the previous month. They play this exact song when presenting the selection of the goals. The mix of true footballing beauty and this musical masterpeace is just breathtaking. I get shiveres every time i see it. Nice one Arcade Fire, keep 'em coming
Good Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/30/06
This song is so well done but only if the record company could at least create some exposure
Everytime You Close Your Eyes... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/30/06
