it is so crazy that you would make a music video like that. i married a man when i was in love with someone else. i always think of this song and how i want to send it to the man i love, just so he can see how i think about him everyday and how i regret not being with him. how im still in love with him and how im so torn up about it. i think you described the song perfectly. unfortunately.

Different | Reviewer: Justin | 4/5/09

Just heard this band perform live in Austin. I can honestly say they are very unique and fresh. I was a little put-off by the consistent anti-religious message that their songs seem to take. Perhaps I was interpreting them wrong as some of these posts seem to state.

Err, really? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/21/08

I'm reading an awful lot about this being about religion... really? That seems off. READING the lyrics conjuring up a much simpler picture - that sort of teenage love you get that comes on so strong, and yet goes away in an instant. It depicts a strong obsession that was "snuffed out before my mom walked into a bedroom", alluding to the innocent, oft hidden and oft guilty feelings teenagers seem to have for each other.

What's all this nonsense about religion?

My interpretation of the song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/2/08

This song is not at all about religion. It's about the pain of unrequitted love, and how shreds of hope leave you tortured. In the sentence, "I carved your name across my eyelids," he is saying that when her name (and any other thoughts of her) come across his mind, he tortures himself by letting him think of her. It's tragically romantic. You have to admit it, "Your name is the only word that I can say!" is pretty damn charming.

LOL! Arcade Fire is so anti-religious it's hilarious you should think this song is about God. Why don't you go listen to the Neon Bible and tell me what you think.
Good song, by the way. A little dramatic though!

whether the song is christian or not shouldn't really matter. If you'd pardon my unitarian response here for a moment, the beauty of the song that you can interpret it any way you'd like to, and share it with people.

'if you want me, please forgive me' could easily reflect the way all of us feel about repentance. Because traditionally, you seek God, he does not seek you.

It could also be a spoken to the girl he loves. Overall he's humbling himself before someone. like that wedding one that was posted earlier. and that unmistakeable. his voice and his tone show the love-stricken vulnerability.

Interpretation is half the fun, and I think this band intentionally rides the line with so many of their songs to bring their two different fanbases together.

Video | Reviewer: BeOptimistic | 7/28/08

This is one of my favorite songs from Arcade Fire and like others I cried when I first heard it. His passionate delivery of the lyrics are just contagious. When I sit and listen to songs I think about music videos that they could possibly be and for some reason I imagine this song taking place at a wedding. As a bride gets reluctantly married to someone while the singer sits in the crowd and watches the woman he loves about to get married. I got this from him saying that he "prays for blindness" so he doesn't see while the bride "prays for rain" so the wedding can be postponed. She keeps "changing her name" because she is getting married. And then I think at some point the singer stands up (right before the upbeat change) and then they run away together. Damn, too bad they haven't made a video. But...thats just me lol.

I'm a Christian myself, but... I really don't think it's about Christianity. I think you're looking at it too hard; I think it's about... well, love. I mean, really. If you read it without assuming it contains any hidden metaphors, it seems to fit the "forlorn lover" model pretty well.

an odor so sweet... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/23/08

Every time I hear this song, I think that it conveys such deep pain, almost like an obsession, but not dangerous like that. It's kind of creepy in that it's so much pure emotion, and seems like the main voice is forcing a "straight answer" from the one by whom he's been hurt/has hurt. Maybe an apology for something gone wrong... If you've ever seen "Endless Love" (old crappy 80's movie) I kind of picture it like that. "I'm sorry I burnt down your house and broke out of jail just trying to see you, but it's only because I love you and I need to know that you love me too"... make sense, anyone?

Amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/27/08

'Crown of Love' is currently my favorite song, because of the pureness of it. The emotion in the lead singer's voice is so raw, the passion is so audible. I love the tempo change at the end, and the lyrics are so rich with imagery. "You've gotta be the one, you gotta be the way, your name is the only word that I can say." I think that line is just radiating sadness and resignation, what a beautiful song.
