Curiously, Pop Staples performs this song in front of a Santeria/Lucumi/Voodoun altar to help John Goodman's character find love. It is very accurate in it's verbage to ride the Horse & open the gates and when there is a ceremony, Papa Legba(Eleggua) is always called first to open the gates between the spirit world and this one. When the participants fall into trance some may be transformed into spirit horses,(similar to another ritual in Indonesia) and then it is acknowledged that Papa Legba(Eleggua in Yoruba) has opened the gates and the ceremony can begin.
