SOAD gets it's 'Zen' on! | Reviewer: Zen Tractor | 11/11/08
It would seem the components in the lyrics are taken in part from Zen Buddhist teachings. "Big Mind", "Small Mind"... check out master Shunryu Suzuki who talks about these principals. Also the waterfall analogy... I recall reading about this in a book somewhere that a Buddhist master was teaching a student about how we are all "one" before this life, but during this life we struggle like drops of water as they fall from the river over a waterfall, but are one again after they join back into the river in the end.
Much respect to SOAD for combining Buddhist teachings in their art. The fact that this song is played in Dropped C is the icing on the cake.

Explicit? I beg to differ. | Reviewer: Mike | 10/31/08
Alice, System of a Down may be a tad explicit at times, but if it is what you truly like, just play it out loud. Your parents will find out eventually anyway, and it's just music. Actually, if they don't know you listen to SOAD, they may actually not know who you completely are. :O
Anyway, some bands you might like:
- Linkin Park: Meteora, The Hybrid Theory, anything beyond that completely sucks.
- Pantera.
- Meshuggah - doubt it though, it's REALLY heavy.
Greetings,
Mike

I can sorta relate. I'm a little 15-year-old girl who doesn't look 15, and I'm in the top classes at school and I'm expected to get good grades and stay in school and stuff because I'm intelligent. My bro is quite the opposite and he's the one who got me into SOAD, but my parents don't know how frequently I listen to this explicit metal. They still think I'm good as gold... NO, I am NOT saying that SOAD makes you bad! What I am trying to say is that my parents may get the wrong impression of me if they know I listen to this stuff alot. That is why I rarely play SOAD on speakers when they're at home and if I do, I only play the "tame" SOAD songs (no swearing, mature content, etc). So yeah... if only I were more bold and not afraid to show what I like, then I would probably be BLARING System Of A Down all day long!! :O

I'm 14 And I Listen To Rap And Metal And My Parents Want Me To Listen To Another Genre Of Music Already 3 Years... I Just Have To Live With It... Cant Show Em The Meanings In The Music... I Usually Dont Talk With My Father... My Mother Thinks I'm Crazy... And... I Think They'll Never Understand Me..

I am 13 and I live in a family where metal is band because they think its satanic. They dont understand that its just a sterio type that wont be broken anytime soon. I listen to Metal 24/7 and all my parents want me to do is listen to something else because they think it will have such a bad influence. I don't understand why parents think that fast loud music will turn you into a punk. I for one have good grades and a future ahead of me but I don't have the freedom to listen to the genre of music I love. System of a Down is a particullar band that has hidden messages in it. Its just whether you understand it or not. That's the problem with metal music. It's diverse and people don't seem to care about fast beets and bands like this one. I am a girl and that makes it even worse for me. People think its garbage and stupid because it seems to have no meaning let alone words in it.

"You know, what's really sad is that bands like this that have really great music with a good message hidden in every song are banned from Middle School dances. I just went to one, and they kept playing that stupid soulja boy song with a message about god knows what! A lot of over-pretective parents won't let them listen to metal, but let them listen to other garbage like hip-hop. I mean, sure the songs are hard for parents to get used to, but they all have a good message and at least it's written in proper English! In hip-hop, what the hell is a shawty, and I really don't even want to think about how somebody cranks something...An even scarier thought is that it's hard to find good bands like this now that even preps are into this hip-hop shit. But seriously, the standards are getting pretty low on singing abilities now. At least SOAD has a lead singer and a backup singer that announciate their words instead of slurred singing (Like Greenday, Jonas Brothers, etc.) and making up words like other shit that people call music. I for one am thankful that SOAD wrote these songs, and I'm a young supporter of the band, even though they're on hiatus. "

This dude has a point, i mean yea SOAD may be so explicit but they convey messages that i could say meaningful.Bands like these shouldnt be banned, bands like these should be experienced by people.and wth do these people ban these kinds of bands?for what reasonable ground?for the explicit lyrics that they give?GOD they're basing moratlity on words that they hear?stupidity, they reject reality.
great point there... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/5/08
you have a really good point and topic to bring up when middle schools play songs like soulja boy which of course is about dancing and sex and of course, who are the first institutions to condemn anything that might be sexual but they WILL play songs like this at dances? THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. so if you want to make a point then this would be a really good one to make.
