Wonderful song, think it's about idealistic view on life with a appetite to right the wrongs, then a frustrating junction in life where those basic ideals & beliefs are repeatly challengedby outsiders until you feel pressurisedto question or stop listening to yourself your heart & senses and use a type of "logic" that is considered universally acceptable.
humans are spiritual & driven by emotion neither would
considered logical.

Rose, I know what you mean, I've been in a very similar situation myself.
The only exception was that I had an artist as an Arts teacher in school, and we could watch him getting destroyed by a system that doesn't understand artists. The sad thing was that he wasn't able to impart his knowledge and understanding to us...
He died of alcohol abuse one year after my graduation.

I love this song, especially since the lyrics are so true. When I was little, I was so happy and idealistic and thought the best in everyone. But I was (and still am) painstakingly sensitive. When I went to school, all the students and teachers donned me as a cry baby. And the kids thought I was a freak because I liked art instead of sports, and the teachers tried to get me disinterested in art. Over the years, I toughened (well i acted like i did) but I hid my feelings, real personality, and I hated myself and the world. The worst thing about schools, or at least my school, is that they overteach you on things like teamwork that is essential, but they never teach you about individuality or self-esteem..

I was in architectural school in Ekaterinburg, Russia when it came out. It was one of our best song to listen drinking beer all night long in our dormitory. As for me, I can't critisize it now, cause every sound of the song is in the head.

I was in about second or third grade when I first heard this song. My mom had it on a cassette when we were driving in the car. Next, I googled it and it became one of my favorite songs-and one of my favorite bands. Good job Supertramp!

Agreed. Some of the best lyrics of heard, and his voice matches it perfectly...but the instrumental part could use a little more work...I'd like to see a PROPER person remake this song without fucking it up too much but just tweaking a bit.

Like everybody i could say that was the best song i've ever heard. but that's a lil bit old fashioned. i prefer to criticism the song. it was good. song was good so were the lyrics. what the song DOES lack, is a taste of instrumental Rock structure.
