Like most of the nu-metal bands that hit the scene in the late 90's static-x had the look of a band that was on way out. After having great success on their first two cd's Wisconsin death Trip and Machine the band hit a road bump with their 3rd effort "shadow Zone". IT proved to be an obvious attempt to sound like Korn, and get some radio play and it completely backfired. They isolated their old fan base and gained very few new ones. Luckily in their newest record "start a war" they take a chance and return to their old ways of simply thrashing away with Wayne Static using his unique vocals to the max. I say they take a chance because while static is in their comfort zone to just thrash for 40 minutes, the music world has lost touch with their style of music and there's a good chance the record could have flopped. A majority of the nu-metal bands have either changed their style or fallen into oblivion, so Static returning to their original self is a big risk. The risk paid off though with the record doing well on the charts it's first week out, and the loyal fans who enjoy the thrashing have come out and bought it.

The enemy is a great song that sets the tone for the entire Cd. It's fast, hard, and has Wayne bellowing out his usual trio of grunts, whispers, and screechs. It will bring you back to the days of Wisconsin Death trip, and while it is not their most original sounding song it is still damn good. If you were a fan of Static's first 2 records pick this one up and you will not be dissapointed. If you liked Shadow zone don't go anywhere near this one. This record is a clear attempt by Static to rekindle the momentum from their first records, and they definitely succeed.

The enemy I give a 9/10 because its everything you could want from a Static-x song, and the record itself I give an 8/10. It's loud, fast, and a thrash fest but it wasn't very innovative and the last song on the record "brain fog" was just a waste of my time. The record sets out to put Static back on the map of relevant metal bands out there, and it has and will continue to succeed in doing that. If their next record comes out and is as good as this one they will definitely establish themselves as a band that is back on the scene for good. ( Static usually puts out a new record every 2 years or so)

IF you have the chance see these guys live see them! They put on an amazing show and sound exactly the same live as they do on a CD which surprised me. Their shows are always cheap, and their always good so go see them. Plus they always tour with up and coming bands that are good. I saw them at the house of Blues and American Head Charge came very close to stealing the show from them... later peeps
