Can we ever have what we had? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/12/11
This is a really good song which is related in my opinion to a Tony's personal experience, rather than deliberately leave it to people's judgement. Some may feel identified with the lyrics, and some may just interpret it differently but in the end it's just a story based on a personal experience in my opinion.
I'm 31 years old and still totally hooked to this amazing band, and I know about love a thing or two, but I think there are two subjects coming up here, one being friendship and the other one being a mismatched love.
My interpretation of the song would be a friendship as a child who is thought to be perfect but feelings on his friend aroused through that perfect friendship, and that's where many people feel identified with the song. But I think the author talks about a friendship which is broken through a sham one, because she never saw him as a lover ("..You saw us always clearer than me, how we were never meant to be...") and the subsequent denial led to a broken friendship...(.."love denied meant the friendship would die" ) and the realization that he wants to go back to keep that old friendship which is what he craves for now ("now I have seen the light, these memories make me cry").
I know this inside out, when you get to a certain age and you've gone through several relationships you'll soon realize friendship can be everlasting, whereas love can't be.The idea of everlasting love it's been always idilic and odd, but friendship is more solid. When we get old and cranky what you want to do and where you want to be is being next to the person who's been not only your lover, but your friend as well, till the day you die. Tony was unlucky enough to lose his friendship because of someone who didn't love him equally. Now I'll cut the crap =)
This song.. | Reviewer: Ben | 2/14/11
Sonata Arctica are amazing, every song of them speaks to your heart in a way you can't shake from.
To me this song has 4 stages. The concept of the song is the connection and relatipnship between two people who mean or meant everything to eachother.
The first stage talks about what they had in the past, how blindly happy they were, how great was their love and friendship and how they had no worries. Then he says how he lost it, yet he asks if there's a chance to get it back, as if there's still hope, by using the question:
"Can we ever have what we had then?
Friendship unbreakable "
Notice the word "we", as if there as still a relationship in this point.
The second stage is about the understanding they will never had what they had. there's no hope anymore for the two of them to have what they had, the friendship is already broken and they lost the game:
"And we'll never have what we had then
Friendship unbroken "
Notice the words "We'll never" and "unbroken" (it is already broken in this point.
The 3d stage talks about moving on, he understands why it had to be over and that it was not meant to be, and now he hopes to find a new relationship to fill his emptiness . He talks about HIMSELF:
"Can I ever have what I had then?
Friendship unbroken"
Notice the word "I"
The last stage is the giving up, he knows he will not have anything like what they had with anyone else, and he gives up on love. Though he never and will never stop missing and loving that other person.
That's what this song says to me, my best friend is also my lover. Problem is he's in a relationship with someone else for 7 years now. They will not break up, though we keep our friendship and our relationship behind the partner's back, I know one day I will have to break it, but our connection is so strong that our love is truly and honestly, unbreakable. As far as we will be from eachother, the love will never die
meaning of the song | Reviewer: LSscout | 11/11/10
I don't think there is just one meaning to this song.
It's what you make of it, what you think it is about and how it makes you feel.
Because for me its like the choice between love and friendship. But for someone else it could be totally different.
Btw I really really love this song

the comments got me even more confused,
this song is my favourite atm,
but does it tell the story of someone who had been in love with their friend which led to the end of their frienship, and now they want them back and dont care about love anymore..
or someone who fell in love and ignored their childhood friend, which ended their friendship and now that the love story is done, they want their friend back ?

Sonata Arctica is amazing! This song is my favourite from them, besides Tallulah. It drives a stake down into my heart... I lost some very good friends to these sorts. In the end, friends are more important than lovers.
Sham and a lie | Reviewer: Darthair | 10/15/09
I disagree with Jenn. When interpreting lyrics, one shouldn't always focus overmuch on the title of the song. And this song certainly does more than "mention" friendship. I would say that the song is mourning an old friendship. One might almost call it an elegy, though it mourns a lost idea, or feeling, rather than the person.
And yes, while it is true that we love our friends, it's not the same sort of love that you have for your lover. Love isn't a single, simple feeling, it's a lot more complicated than that. Could you say that you love your family in the exact same way that you love your friends? Or in the same way that you love a lover? Of course not, it's more complicated than that. And that last type is the most complicated of all. It's something that most humans search for, strive for, reach for. And sometimes think we have found it, only to find that those feelings aren't true. That's the "sham and a lie" of the song, the love that wasn't true.
To say that ALL of what the speaker and this other person had was a "sham and a lie" seems to me a gross misinterpretation. You're taking the title of the song and ripping it out of context with all the rest of it.
Misinterpretation | Reviewer: Jenn | 10/3/09
Many people seem to interpret this song as being in love with a friend, simply because it mentions 'friendship.'
But it's called "sham and a lie," meaning whoever the speaker loved and whatever he had, all turned out to be fake in the end.
Stop putting this seperation between friendship and love. Just because you're in a steady relationship with someone doesn't mean it isn't a friendship. You must be close friends with someone in order to love them, anyhow.
I also wanted to comment on something 'paul' said: Are you basing all girls off of an experience you had with one girl? Seriously, you speak as if the male gender always thinks before acting. Whether or not someone makes a mistake that ruins a relationship is unrelated to gender. Keep that in mind before turning the events of one experience into a fact that represents over half the world's population.

I kinda relate to this song because I love my best friend for 2 years now, but I never had the guts to ask her or say anything to her.. After reading these lyrics, I don't know what to do anymore..
I mean, I love her more than anything else in the world, but I couldn't bare to see our friendship shatter because of love.
Since a week or two she got into a relation with my other best friend, it hurts to see them together, but I'm afraid that if I say anything to her I could ruin both friendships, but that wouldn't be worth it. IF she says yes, then i'll still ruin the friendship with my other friend, but if she says no, then I might ruin the friendship with her and maybe my other friends won't talk to me again either ..
I just don't know what to do anymore..
It's all so confusing..
Friendship and love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/12/09
I think this song is meant to make us understand that friendship is even more important than love. yes, love is a stronger feeling and sometimes we forget every other thing, blinded by love and we can even "breake the unbrakable". But I've to say: love is like a fire that seems to burn strongly and infinitely, but it can be quenched in a moment. but a frienship is to last forever, it can be hit and hurt, but it will never breake up, if you want it.
thanks Ely, if you're reading, you must have understood how I'm grateful to you for the lesson I learnt.yes, it still hurts me, but now I have a friend I thought I'd lost forever.
This is Sad | Reviewer: paul | 9/9/09
it's sad how girls just do not think when they act. Every story here is about some boy/girl friendship who turned into love, but the girl choked at some point and Breaks the unbreakable.
Come on girls, instead of getting some random dude that's with you only because of your "body" and obviously doesn't care less about what you feel, maybe you should actually think about that friendship thing that can slowly evolve into a serious love relationship.
Thank you Sonata Arctica for this amasing song though, I really enjoy listening and playing this song =D
