i'm 18 and i'm english and this is my point of view... | Reviewer: Laurence | 3/22/08
For me this song describes my family situation perfectly... my mum was so scared of letting go of me in case i went "off the rails" that i almost did in my fight to get free. I moved in with my dad and step mum and i would certainly at times my dad had given up on life. He told me one day that "sooner or later you're gona realise that life is about working your balls off for eff all!" this song made me question that. Cindy i would say you're wrong - if people need to find themselves why should the world stop them - we only get one life and thus one chance to be happy - why waste it as simple wage slaves?! work is important in order to exist i understand that but surely life isnt "all about work" ? thats insane! the line cindy quoted "theres nothing in this world that you cant be if you want it enough!" for me is incredibly uplifting - it certainly gave me much needed strength during my a-levels! this song says that you shouldnt let your parents set the boundaries for what you can achieve in life and tells us to remember the feelings we have now when we become parents. my dad and step mum regularly told me how i would "fail a-levels". this song was the only thing telling me i could do it! for this reason i implore parents everywhere to put faith in not pressure on their kids and instead of having a carrot or a stick, point to a distant star - tell them to reach out and grab it! if its the one thing they want they can spend their whole life achieving it! tell them that!!! that way your kids wont lose their way and become drug addicts and wasters.
stupid people | Reviewer: BMH | 2/28/08
ok maybe you people dont get this song. so ill break it down to stupid terms. this guy's mom forces christianity down his throat. he doesnt believe in it. he doesnt wanna stop doin what he likes to do for fear of "Hell". his dad did alot of nice stuff and was un appreciated so he basically gave up on everything in life. and the guy doesnt wanna do that. then he wont force his beliefs on his kids when he has them. i guess if you arent there and have never been there you wont completely understand some opinions or the meaning. dont get me wrong you can still like the song, but you just cant relate. and to anybody saying this song is the reason for a death, you are an idiot. because it says nothing about killing yourself and the person the song is coming from isnt gonna commit suicide. so if thats what somebody got from it then did it they werent very bright. call me heartless but that doesnt change anything, its not like somebody being repremanded is gonna help the dead. so shut up and enjoy the music.

this song i think is perfect for my thinkin about how i wanna live..
i usually dont listen to sad songs and music like this but
my dad had committed suicide from all the shit he went through just a month ago..
and my mom is heavy into cocaine and her life is going down the drain.
and i just wanna make somethin good for my life and this song gives me chills when i listen to it.
How dumb. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/9/08
The song is on my ipod too, but just becasue it is there does not mean that I'm going to get addicted to drugs or become a drunk. I know people who have done worse, and they love this song. The song isn't what made them do it. It's what goes on in their life. If you really want to get mad at something go check out the people he was hanging out with. Don't blame it on a song. It did nothing.
To those who dont understand | Reviewer: sabs | 1/7/08
i absolutely love this song. it totally relates to my how i see things.
i saw what Cindy had to say, and i understand where she is coming from, but i dont think that some ppl understand that this DOES happen in real life. They obviuosly did not have to struggle through their childhood and teenage years.
For example...my mom DOES live in fear...of my dad and life in general.
My dad HAS pretty much given up on life, and it makes them hard to be around.
i mean honestly listen to and look at the lyrics...
no ones life is perfect, but others are harder than yours...so take that into consideration. sure everyone has a rough past, but this is my present and this kind of music helps me through it. so dont diss the music, just let the sounds explain you...

to those who criticize... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/07
I like how people blame the song for the death of a kid...oh and to the person that called us all insensitive...it's only because she blames the song...it's not like he went "this song really makes me want to OD." Oh I'm also pretty sure the members of this band are more sucessful moneywise than any of us who have posted up here...including cindy.
regarding what cindy said | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/27/07
hey seriously i don't think that this mothers perspective is that wrong, since shes in pain for her sons loss and all
i'm a teenager and i can relate to this song but still its just a song, and its not written for everyone and not everyone can relate to that song
but still i agree with that mom talking about paying the bills and all which i think is correct cuz as long as they take care of u there are some other things u must cope with
anyway i feel sorry for your loss but its just music, and its supposed to make ur feelings come out easier when u need them too, thats what it is for me anyway
and i dont think that this had something to do with the way your song ended up anyway what can i say, life goes on
and again | Reviewer: toast | 11/9/07

“I don’t wanna live like my mother I don’t wanna let fear rule my life. I don’t wanna live like my father I don’t wanna give up before I die.” I think this lyric is important. To me I see it as that I know my friends, family, and all the stories and fables I have learned will help me not to live my life like that.
all in all, I love this song.
What about this? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/7/07
To the obnoxious reviewers: First of all, her son died. Could you be more insensitive? Don't think I'm another ignorant adult scolding you. I'm probably younger than you. And for that, you can say I don't know what I'm talking about, because I'm too young, or she's too old, but there are more of us than you. Could we all be wrong, and you're the only ones who know anything at all?
On another note, I adore this song. It's a good chill-out song. And yeah, what the artist is expressing may not be reasonable for ALL teenagers to relate to, because we might not all have parents as bad as he makes his out to be, but it might be a better way for kids to express their anger with their parents than, lets say, drugs, or alcohol. To the reviewer called Cindy, I'm honestly sorry your son decided to turn to that, and I don't think the blame should be on your parenting. If this song makes you feel like that is how he felt, maybe you should reflect a little bit on your own music choices. I'm sure when you were a teenager, not all your songs described you to a tee. If, after that, you still can not overcome your anger, I don't see any reason that your opinion is wrong.
Feel free, of course, anyone, to disagree with me. It's only one opinion.
i love this song | Reviewer: kyle s | 10/16/07
this song fits me perfect
its so true cuz like my mom is always afraid of sompthing weather it be me being raped or mallested or just scared i might get hurt
and my dad has scolereosus or sompthing and athritice alover his body so hes always in pain so he just gave up on life
and i dont really like my parents at all
but dont get me wrong i still like some things they do when their not jerks
evan though i hate most of the syuff they do and a lot about them but i love this song cuz its about all the stuff i dont wanna be
Ummm ok??? | Reviewer: Steve | 10/11/07
It never seems to amaze me how quickly parents loose their lid because of something like this... the song has 2 very good points... the guy doesnt want to live in fear nor he does not want to give up on life before he dies.... an your upset about this why??? i think that when i have kids... i dont want them to fear death... i dont want them to give up../.. i want my flippin kids to grow up to be the old geezer climbing mount everest at age 80!!!! i think that you are upset because of your own doubt that you have in how you raised your son... and by the way... a key indicator that parents do deserve something negative from their kids is when the parents have the gull to say "- from a mother and father, who like many, do not deserve this consequence for their son's actions." Please.... GOOD parents are willing to accept anymistakes that they may have done... its not calling you a bad parent... hell its more of a normal parent... a not perfect parent! if you truly love your kid... and want him to be his own freakin person.. then you have nothing to worry about.

Just calm down. Just because your son likes this song does NOT mean that he thinks you were a bad parent or hates you. It's true that that people can relate to songs, but some people just like music for the sake of liking music. I personally love this song and I think that I have great parents. Heck, my dad even likes this song. So before you go freaking out, you have to understand that you son didn't write the song, he just listened to it.
Smile Empty Soul is one of my all time favorite bands. If you're a new fan I would recommend listening to the songs "God's Army" or "With This Knife" also by Smile Empty Soul.
lets not take this personal | Reviewer: Dezi | 9/3/07
It amazes me the degree some parents take this literally because their child likes this song. I have a 24 year old and he loves it as well as I. I think you need to understand this is how the performer feels. It is not meant to be taken personally.
I am impressed the degree of success of these persons. So apparently they have moved beyond the parents in the subtitle.
