The lyrics are a poetic summary of the Watchmen | Reviewer: Delay | 2/16/09
I think it's a mistake to read any one line of the song alone. Since this version was written for Watchmen specificly, it seems to be about the exalted, strange but ultimately fictional identity of superhero icons. It discusses the same themes as Moore's graphic novel -- hollow grace and facades covering up the same decadence that makes up the rest of the world. The ending's implied escape from it all seems to fit with Nite Owl and the young Silk Specter, who manage to build whole and healthy identities of their own, thereby breaking free from the decadent lie that is the Watchmen.
The chorus - I think that's a hypothetical observer addressing the godlike figures that the Watchmen present themselves as. "Is it bright where you are, have the people changed, does it make you happy you're so strange" - this bit seems to be asking if they actually believe in their own righteousness, does what they do have any real effect (do they change people, or as people), do they feel superior being set apart from the rest of humanity. The last lines of the chorus undermine the benevolence of heroes, and summarise the central theme of Moore's book - the destruction cause by entitled heroes

OMG.. its a d33p song.. take it that way...
Take on a few of the lyrics... | Reviewer: Josh | 12/19/08
Adding to the Batman interpretation, i believe most of the lyrics are understood in that light but i think, "Is it bright where you are?..." etc, refers to Bruce speaking to his parents, for which he became Batman in a sense...asking them if theres hope for the world, can people become better, or am i fighting in vain?...
flesh and blood disintegrate, shadow lost...speaks of how Bruce and Batman are becoming moreso one person.
As for the song itself...it is truly amazing!
I myself am a professional magician, and am working on an illusion to this song, but itll have to be quite good to live up to this song!

I have read the graphic novel many times, and the lyrics are actually about it. It makes several references to the plot. Rorschock's alter ego is man who walks the streets with a sign saying "The end is near" and Jon(Doctor Manhattan) was made the way he is when he was desintegrated. I'm also fairly sure there is a direct quote by Ozymandias in there somewhere
Actual meaning of the song. | Reviewer: James | 11/10/08
Here, in the words of Corgan himself:
"I found myself going, 'I can't write a song about Batman, I'm in an alternative band.' And I thought, this is stupid, if I can write a song about Batman and it serves the purpose, which is to make it happen and connect with the movie, and connect with something that is unique and original, then, why not? For me, it was a great kind of artistic thing to do because it was very freeing. I wasn't talking about myself or trying to represent the Smashing Pumpkins. I was trying to represent Batman."
Still fits Watchmen very well. Take into account that Rorschach is Alan Moore's interpretation of how a Batman style character would fit into the real world. All rambling aside, it is an incredible song.
Rorschach | Reviewer: tom=-connolley | 10/30/08
o.k we've all drawn comparisons to watchmen however i think it relates especially to Rorschach
For now we stand alone- Rorschach wants to reveal the truth and is alone
The world is lost and blown- lost to the lies that it has been fed
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate- dr manhattans treatment for Rorschach .
basically i find it all too convenient there are so many references and i've only picked out some of the basic ones, after all if watchmen were to have a protagonist it'd be rorschach as he is the mask-killer hunter and only knows how to be a hero even when the world no longer needs one.

one of the best songs ever.
any of you have ever ready the graphic novel "Watchmen"... this is a PERFECT fit for it. It's use in the trailer for "watchmen"s movie was not a mistake, this is such a sad song as was the book. I encourage you all to read the novel if you haven't, but be warned it does require a bit of maturity.

the smashing pumpkins did great with this song when they ripped it away from the original wich is also from the smashing pumpkins and if your not familiar with the original ill tell you where you can hear it if you watch batman forever with george clooney its in that movie good song
I agree, that this version of the song is alot better than the original. As to what this song is actually about, I have a different opinion. I picture a drug dealer. Addressing a celebrity he once knew before she became famous. She was once associated with him, but left her old life behind. When she comes to the revelation that the fame and bright lights weren't all that she thought they were, she returns to her former drug dealing acquaintence.
Huh, I can't help but think about the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy. This definitely reminds me of that novel.
This song is referring to the apocalypse, and this idea is greatly supported by the title. The beginning of the end is the beginning of another life or world or universe. "Is it bright where you are?" is referring to the kingdom of heaven ("and now the kingdom comes"). The lyrics also speak of the unification of heaven and earth -- "Time has stopped before us
The sky cannot ignore us <-- God and His people
No one can separate us." <-- unification right there
I could probably go on for a very long time to support this idea, but I don't feel like writing an essay >>" But the idea fits perfectly within the lyrics. What the singer's comments on this idea should be taken into further consideration, though.
I've just been looking this song up lately due to its use in the trailer for the upcoming WATCHMEN movie (March 2009). I haven't read the graphic novel itself yet, but of course plan to do so before the movie hits theaters. That said, I think the tone and style of this song fit really well with the story's plot and setting. A great song.
This song was originally written for Batman and Robin, and I think it applies to batman specifically. Batman himself has two personalities in his body, Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. The conversation point is valid, but we know who both parties are if we apply the surrounding info. I'm pretty sure Bruce is talking to Batman, waiting to see if he'll ever get to be just Bruce again. As long as the world is still consumed by hate, Batman will have to exist, but it seems like a hopeless battle and Batman is thinking of giving up,and if he does, Bruce and Batman can just watch the world consumed by its pain.
Well, the title sums it up. And about it being a conversation, I think the dude singing it is at the end of the world, and whoever he is talking to is at the beginning. Hence "Is it bright where you are?".
Or maybe he's stuck in limbo, between the beginning and ending-"Time has stopped before us"
Or maybe he was just too drunk on pumpkin juice, and blurted out whatever came to his head.
Whatever it was, awesome match for the Watchmen Teaser!
P.S. The Big Crunch idea is sort of in the dumpster for now because scientists have now noticed an acceleration in the expansion curve, but who knows what Dark Energy's capable of.
I think this is probably one of the better songs to be put with a movie. I heard the original and it wasn't all that good in my opinion, but this song and this version is just amazing. I love the beat, and the tone of it. I play it constantly and I've honestly fallen in love with this song.
I love reading the reviews everyone has posted and the theories behind this song. I'm not sure yet what to make of the lyrics, but I do know they are amazing and very impactful!
I'm not totally sure I agree with the rest of these reviews. I'm not sure where everyone is getting some idea about the cycles of the universe here. Some of the lyrics do not work for that. The song uses the words "I" and "We" It's like a conversation or interaction between two groups of people or things. I also get the idea that they are talking about some sort of balance. Good/Evil or Creation/Destruction? "In your darkest hour, I hold secrets flame" One thing coming to the rescue of another or being dependent on eachother? Also, in response to the Universe Theory. We aren't completely sure of that yet. The Big Crunch is just a theory right now. Creation is actually accelerating so the universe is no where near a crunch anytime soon. We would still be in the beginning process after the explosion. It is an interesting idea though. Once we know more about Dark Matter and Dark Energy we can determine if this theory is valid. Point being though is there is a lot that human beings do not understand. Including this song lol. All we know is this song is awesome and fits The Watchmen trailer perfectly.
