Smashing Pumpkins smash onto the alternative/grunge scene | Reviewer: Tyler | 11/18/2008
My review here is in part a review from the Album gish but applies to The Smashing Pumpkins as a whole!
I know Im kinda lame and that the album gish has been out since 1991 but I am now just really listening to the whole album of which Ive never really heard before because like most people we are all still stuck on albums such as siamese dream and mellon collie and possibly even ava adore for the smashing pumpkins. gish really never got much credit or acclaim as far as Smashing pumpkins goes. But by far I think it is the best album by the Smashing Pumpkins and then Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream would probably end up in a tie for second place.
Billy Corgan and his band write all across the musical scale from heavy and energetic songs to a beautiful power ballad love song. Granted this album did come out in a time when bands like Guns 'N' Roses and Motley Crue and Poison and other such 80's hair bands ruled the music scene along side the then hugely popular grunge and thrash metal scene. So take all that and throw it into a basket and mix it up and what do you get?...
The Smashing Pumpkins album gish! They really covered The whole music scene not just one aspect of it.
And thats why The Smashing Pumpkins claimed their stake in the music business and have continued to do so. They continue to diversify their music by not sticking to just one genre of music but by blending the most popular or on the rise genres and even sorta creating their own genre. Most notably they did this with their 'Adore' album by blending Industrial (which during 1998 when 'Adore' came out, was on the rise in popularity with band such as KMFDM, Rammstein, Static-X, & Fear factory) with alternative/grunge/metal to form a sorta industrial alternative or industrial grunge sound.
The Smashing Pumpkins always continue to stretch the boundaries of music and think outside the box. They continue create their music and think outside the box and never stick to anyone genre in particular despite that the current popular music or on the rise music could never catch on or just go out of style or their album entirely could never gain much popularity.
The music on their debute album gish never really caught on with the mainstream media and The Pumpkins never really got a break until 'Siamese Dream' but if your looking for pure raw Smashing Pumpkins or something from them other than just the popular albums, then 'gish' is it. If your new to the Smashing Pumpkins I would recommend buying this album first. Granted its not a popular Pumpkins album and most people wouldnt know who it was unless your a real fan of them and granted your friends may think your a bit wierd listening to an almost underground album and something that isnt popular but I personaly think that this album is as realative in todays music if not even more so than it was in 1991 when it was originaly released. I think had this album come out now or at least after 2000, it would have really been big and quite possibly could have landed the Smashing Pumpkins on such huge summer tours as Ozzfest, Family Values, Headbangers Ball, Projekt Revolution, Summer Sanitarium and other huge summer tours.
The Pumpkins also hit huge with 'Siamese Dream' and 'Mellon Collie' in the mid 90's and really redefined the genre's of grunge and alternative and then hit the industrial scene with 'Adore' and really stretching that genre out to not just be associated with metal but also with alternative and grunge and making it sound great!
I havent really listened to their new album 'Zeitgeist' so I cant really say much about that but as far as I know the Pumpkins havent really gotten a hit with it and I guess people are just afraid to listen to mix genre music or afraid of the Pumpkins redefining genre's. Either that or people just have there heads stuck up there bums and think that the pumpkins style of music has gone out of style and that the only kind of music popular or will be popular today is metal, rock, pop, and country. everything else is considered underground and not to be touched unless your considered different and just wierd for listening to non popular music.
Once again people are afraid of giving the Smashing Pumkins a chance at creating some really good music!

i love the smashing pumpkins. their music is great in how its dark and joyous at the same time especially tonight tonight that is the greatest song EVER! anyone who says the smashing pumpkins suck doesnt know alot about music. and as for the new album zeitgeist its just as amazing as siamese dream or mellon collie and the infinite sadness well okay not really cuz those albums are like a musical baptism but yeah zeitgeist would be like the equivalent of a really good album by anyother band. billy is an absolute genious his lyrics his arrangements he is amazing. the pumpkins are just amazing really.
lyrical correction | Reviewer: Prammaven | 4/4/2008
"Today is the greatest DAY I'VE EVER KNOWN"
are the correct lyrics.
If Billy Corgan had written "Today is the greatest days of the year", we would all think he was either French or German... Not only is the word choice awkward, but so is the meter (number of syllables), which would not have fit the rest of the song, muchless its drum beat.
the most influential band on the planet | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/15/2008
The Smashing Pumpkins are a band that changes so much, that has so much ups and downs, that it's amazing they even made it to Siamese Dream. They influence so much music, and they could only be compared to about 2 other bands, Soundgarden and the Melvins. They are so incredibly superior to other music, they're interchanging, always going their own way, and sticking to what they love. This is my favorite band, and although I believe they ruined their career by playing more shows after "The Last Metro Show", I still believe that they are the best. Just one thing I wish for is a new album.
Smashing Pumpkins 4 Life! | Reviewer: ANDREA | 1/24/2008
It kind of sucks that pumpkins arent so great now, I mean I love them and all , but I wish they could be awesome like the good old days, and I know billy is more talented than that.

Pumpkins Vanc Show | Reviewer: hz | 10/16/2007
Hey, 'pumpkins suck dude', I was at the Vancouver show as well. The Bravery opened and they were great. Played from the first album and the new one.
The Pumpkins rocked. Right off the first heavy Doomsday Clock bass rolls.
The acoustics in the old forum building did suck though depending on where you were.
Smashing Pumpkins R So Awesome! | Reviewer: John H. | 10/2/2007
This is a band that ive always loved listening to. I am only 15 but like Elliot, I have grown up listening to them and was crushed when they broke up. I think the world needs Smashing Pumpkins back!
Well thats my say in this. ~John H.~
Smashing Pumpkins Suck | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/26/2007
Recently went to a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Vancouver, BC. One fan died, the opening band were some weird group from New York that also stunk. The Smashing Pumpkins were terrible...what is with the 15 minute songs...repetitive lyrics and melodies...butt
