Most lyricists use metaphores for things. A "shell" can be an internal prison that they cage their rage in for fear of hurting those around them, or being afraid of what may happen if that anger was released to the fullest extent. And since this song talks about them deciding to "Wait and bleed", it indicates that rather than hurt everyone around them, they hurt themselves as a means of releasing that caged anger. As for "take it like a man", truthfully I find there's more strength and manliness in dealing with your own problems on your own than leaning on someone else and releasing everything on another person. It's also more civilized. And before anyone tries to call me a 'fag' for saying that, don't bother trying to say I sound like a girl, I *AM* a girl. This song is what people in my darker days claimed to be "my" song. Because I was once that angry.
