The person portrayed in this song IS hurt, yes. But he hurt himself /wow, so un-emo-esque!/. He chose to drive this one person who loved him away, in order to protect her. He sees himself as a... well, I would normally call a person like that a f***ing p**sy... But, for argument's sake, let's call him a dark soul. He sees himself as an embodiment of all that should not be. He feels he will hurt the person who loves him. He doesn't want her to suffer. And so, he chooses isolation. And, this isolation deepens his wounds, making him suffer more and more and so on. Yet, somewhere along the course of things, the aforementioned someone betrays him. She gets tired of waiting for him or something and just leaves. He sees that as "betrayal", which, frankly, it isn't.
