I am now a 37 year old teacher and mother and I have honestly never forgotten the 50 states in alphabetical order. It has helped me in trivia contests, graduate school classes, social conversation, and all kinds of talent challenges. I am one of the few adults I know who can name all 50 states in alphabetical order in under one minute! Parents, teachers, and anyone who works with children should be teaching this song! That amazed me, since I learned it from my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Vantrese. I still remember all of the words, including all 50 states in alphebetical order. By the way, I am now 36 years old. I loved it so much I decided to teach it to my music students as well. It has become a favorite and a tradition to learn this in fourth grade. My students perform it every year for our school Memorial Day Observation. If I tried to take it out of the program, they would boycott me! However, I have never heard the original performance by Ray Charles. Does anyone know which album I could find it on? In my first high school American history class, the teacher asked us if anyone could name all fifty states. When I did it in alphabetical order in a chanting rhythm (that's the only way I could remember them all!), he thought I was cheating! I had no idea Ray Charles wrote the song--I thought it was by Fred Waring, probably because we sang so many of Waring's arrangements in choir.
