As one of those tree hugging commie hippies from socialist elsewhere, it paints all of you firmly as Americans, and more precisely Americans who have been over the border and not gotten it, or never been outside of cosy little America at all. I think the best one can do is take the song and use it as a starting point to deliberately look from an angle you've never looked from before. You don't have to agree, but you can give yourself a new experience and learn from it. And uhm, yeah. The song was written 30 years ago.
