world war, collapssed economies are already out there - the genie is out of the bottle. the walls are closing in. as a human you know this deep down inside and there is nothing you can do but listen to the alarms ringing. sitting in your little corner of the world you call a home mummbling infront of the t.v. news "what is he doin' what is he doin'"

Thom has stated publicly that he wrote the lyrics to the song one evening while driving in his car after hearing on the radio George W Bush had been elected. Re-read the lyrics now and they will make a lot more sense..

I dont speak english well, so I might understend wrong, but I thought that: "Genie let out of the bottle; It is now the witching hour" means outburst of war. "when the walls bend with your breathing" I understood as psyhic condition of soldier who has to go to war.
"They will suck you down to the other side" I understood as "If you participate in war
you will change and will be unable to recover afterwords". Im not sure, becouse english is not my mother language

its about bodysnatching. the good ole assholes with their undeserved knowledge of reality like to whisper their thoughts when the dark energy is the strongest. 300 am. So like elliott smith said as well, at two fourty five in the morning you better set your fucking alarm if you're trying to be a free slave.

In re: Anonymous on 11/3/09 who said, "It is like an anthem for entering into a much darker age, and you something is wrong but can't really put your finger on it," that's a great way of explaining the entire Radiohead vibe!!! I feel that's been their message or theme since OK Computer.

I heard somewhere that the sounds in this song are based off an experience Thom had when he starved himself for a few days to experience what the african children experienced...the sounds in this song are based off the sounds of his stomach...As for the lyrics I'm not to sure if their related to the self starvation but could be

I believe that this song is a reference to the post-911 era. I believe the lyrics "Genie let out of the bottle/ It is now the witching hour/ Murderers, you’re murderers/ We are not the same as you" refer to how the governments in both, the US and UK, began to usurp the authority vested in them and use the attacks as an excuse to exact unjust laws, like illegal wiretapping, which they justified under the false pretense of "patriotism." "Shadows Blue and Red" point to these countries being under the guise of a dark power. The rest of the song is expressing the anxiety of knowing what is happening, but being powerless to stop it. Your alarm bells should be ringing.

this song reads and is... bad acid trip. dmt.. something along the sorts. everything i read says politics politics politics.. well.. you've clearly never experience hallucinogens.
first of all the genie let out of a bottle..
when the walls bend with your breathing... is exactly that... when you breathe.. and the walls are bending in and out with your breaths...
sometimes you feel or see a force of something trying to tell you... that this is whats up... they will suck you down to the other side.. they want you to go with them.. to the other side.. to the life of energy and molecules and aliens.. they are trying to tell you something.. it is there.. they will suck you down..
you will see the shadows blue and red.. your alarm bells will be ringing.. your trying to get out of it.. your trying your trying.. you just cant.. your stuck down in .. you got sucked in.. your never coming out... this is the gloaming.
Trip | Reviewer: Jesse | 11/8/09
This song reads like a bad trip experience to me. Sense of time is wayyy off (they should be ringing), distorted view of surroundings (when the walls bend with your breathing)and inherent fear of everything and everyone around you (they will suck you down to the other side).
I realize that's probably a really simple explanation for a much more complex song, but I'll be damned if it wasn't written on a shroom trip.
They should be ringing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/3/09
This is possibly one of the most underrated songs written by Radiohead.
It is like an anthem for entering into a much darker age, and you something is wrong but can't really put your finger on it. And your alarms should be ringing! This is wrong! but you do nothing. You get sucked into it.

This song, on the surface, seems like a descent into a dark world. After all, "gloaming" is another word for twilight, the moment of day right before the sun sets and dusk begins. But for a Radiohead song, that's too siple. As for the deeper meaning, I'm still discovering that for myself.
One brilliant song, though.
