He describes the phases of how the mind uses various defense mechanisms (proverbs or wishing/hoping for wings) or other consolations (chemical reactions), then he lapses back into shock (hysterical, floor collapsing). It's about the ultimate let down. In extremely vivid, beautiful detail he describes the various phases of the various sensation that are so powerful when you're truly "let down".
