It's about a daredevil (<---get it?) who gradually loses grasp of who he is after achieving fame, fortune, and making these things the sole provider of his self. And as he becomes less important his bloated ego gets admonished, and then HE starts saying "Don't leave me high and dry" because he fills betrayed. His feelings of betrayal are then mocked by saying "Oh, it's the best thing that you ever had", then "it's gone away". At first I thought the chorus was a chick, but it's his conscious telling him over and over again you fucking deserved this for not listening to me.

as i see this song:
when we don't succeed or don't get what we want we don't have to be "at our wits end" because it just can harm us. bad things happen there a lot of crisis in our life but we should'nt collapse we have to continue and fight for ourselves.
Love me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/19/11
Hmm well when someone says 'high and dry" that means being left alone with nothing an no one. To me this song is about a person who would do anything to fit in and when he finally has it all and is happy the ppl who he / she tried to be like will not be happy for them. This person singing the song is pleaded for them not to leave him high and dry. This could be about a previous girlfriend or even a friend. Someone who desperately trying to fit in and be accepted when really the person who sings this song has accepted them all along.
This has nothing to do with the lyrics. The song just has history to it. | Reviewer: Sam | 12/18/10
So, I know this has absolutly nothing to do with the lyrics of the song, but this is the first song I ever slow danced with my current girlfriend to. It was in the middle of a dark empty basketball court. It was perfect, and I remember hearing the lyrics "Oh, it's the best thing that you've ever had. The best thing that you've ever, ever had" and thinking that she was the best that has ever happened to me.
Moving | Reviewer: James | 12/6/10
Believe this is about having a dependency on anything, opiates, alcohol, weed, even non-drugs and watching it's mounting tolls on your social life, dreams, and more. Very moving, I can relate to it personally as I smoke every day.

For me its all about doing bad things to yourself you know its wrong yet you keep doing them, you start of as something and become a victim of your surroundings and before you know it youve totally changed and are way beyond recovery, well thats my take on it!

why | Reviewer: blearghenfeldenhaugher | 8/23/10
To all the the people saying that anyone here is wrong about what this song means. You guys are all bullshit, i mean come on. does any form of literature actually have a true meaning? the writer or artist can have any meaning he wants for it but when it's released to the public it is robbed of it's true meaning, the true meaning of the song(or article or book or whatever) is meant for the public to decide, for the public to decide what it means to themselves.
i love the evil knievel story lol | Reviewer: Anon | 8/10/10
If Thom Yorke wants to say this song is ably nothing, who are we to question him? I didn't write the song, so I cannot tell him what it is about. I can only express what it means to me, personally, since art can be taken any way by the person viewing it, even if it is opposite the intended meaning.
As a writer, I understand Thom. I have written random stuff, or just strings of sentences with no other intention, but to be literal or obscure, and when I sit back and read sometimes, you can fit what I wrote into a multitude of situations.
if he meant something and does not want to say what, it's his choice, and as a fan, I give him the benefit of the doubt and continue interpreting the song as I see fit.
blahh | Reviewer: Jake | 8/8/10
To me, this song is the story of my life. I have always heard and liked this song, but I never really knew the lyrics. My girlfriend I gave my life to cheated on me, and that's what I think when I listen to this song. She was the best thing I ever had, and now shes gone. I am all torn up inside and I do wish we could make love, but she left me high and dry. Everytime I ride my motorcycle I remember when she used to ride with me and the fun we used to have...

People please, make what you want of the song but it has meaning to everyone who appreciates it. I personally don't have an interpretation of it but there's lyrics which stand out to me. So yes, feel free to share your thoughts and interpretations but don't force them onto other people.
Mr. Bipolar | Reviewer: Frank | 6/14/10
This song is about mania, as in manic depression. It is about the intense confusion and suffering that comes with the beautiful soaring high of a manic episode. You feel so good you lose control of your behavior, and people look down on you, yet at the same time you feel like a god, like the world belongs to you. You are high and dry.
As he battles with his impulses and tries to master his behavior he becomes antisocial, he is the one who cannot talk.
This is the battle all people with bipolarity go through. And after it all, you still know that it is the best feeling you will ever have, better than having kids, better than making love. Its a terrible illness.
to what parker said | Reviewer: Tome Yorke | 5/23/10
yeah what tome Yorke said about this song being about nothing is absolute bullshit, thats like him saying Creep ment nothing i think he's just really secluded dude and doesn't like putting himself out there but can't help writting really personal music. creep and this song both mean alot too me and i'm not gonna say why this song means alot because everyone has they're own intake and it would just start an arguement but this song really really fits what i'm going threw right now. with every detail. my new favorite song and band.
What is Thom saying? | Reviewer: Parker | 3/29/10
Thom Yorke said that this song is about nothing at all, but that's such bullshit. This song really blew my mind the first time I listened to it, and now that I listen to it, I think of how the song relates to life and how much it can suck to be lonely. Music is art, however, so that is my opinion. All these people on here saying that this song is definitely sex, drugs, etc are wrong, because art is all in the mind of the viewer. Great song, #4 on my top 10 list of favorite songs.
different opinions | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/26/10
fag isn't a great word... how do you know everyone who commented on this song is stupid or a fag? what i think- is that when they wrote this beautiful song, it meant something important to them, but i don't see why they would mind their fans interpreting it as something slightly different. because either way you look at it, its lyrics are still amazing and meaningful, and that's one of the things that makes Radiohead stand out in amongst all the brainless, meaningless mainstream pop music of today (not that all of its terrible, but let's be honest- most of it is.. lol), is that their lyrics speak to people, and you can feel connected to the song. so let's not be pedantic and try to decode every last word, just enjoy it :)
