For me the song is about the different paths we take good or bad that effect us for the rest of our lives. Also, like a child we are prone to making many mistakes throughout the way-"somethings will never wash away"
I love how just about every radiohead can be interpreted in so many different ways. Thom Yorke is truly a genius and I hope he never stops writing music.
Best Radiohead Song | Reviewer: Marcia | 5/23/08
I just heard the live version of this song, and I have to agree with what the other comments say. It makes me eyes tear up, and for some reason I feel like bursting into tears every time I hear it. It's so plaintive and touching...I need to listen to more music like this. It's my favourite song to walk to.
Arguably the best song of Radiohead!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/22/08
To tell you the truth am not a Radioheadfreak. However, this song is awesome to say the least. I think whatever Thom has ever come up with, this is by far his best song. Over and above it, it is better than live version. Thumbs up!!
This... | Reviewer: Ellis | 3/11/08
...is one of those Radiohead songs I can't listen to too often because it's so touching, like How to Disappear Completely... The live version is so perfect, the piano, Thom's gentle voice that seems to be speaking every truth in the universe... Perfection.
very deep | Reviewer: Jake | 2/21/08
I like to think that the message behind the lyrics means that you can't 'flush' away your problems, because they will grow bigger and bigger and 'grow fangs'. Another interpretation could be that Thom is talking to himself when he says 'how did you go bad?' maybe wondering if fame has changed him for the worse. Either way a stellar song that could have many interpretations as many Radiohead songs do. I prefer the b-side version over the live one though.
My favourite radiohead B-Side | Reviewer: Munro | 11/29/07
..and almost my favourite Radiohead song at all. I just heard the live version for the first time and I was welling up all over again.
You're right Canary, I'm not sure why it's so moving. I looked up this page to find out the lyrics and they're not what I thought at all, but it doesn't spoil it for me - I thought the repeating line was 'Did you go back?'. It just goes to show that the meaning is coming through the music mostly as opposed to the lyrics, the art is not spoiling the music with the lyrics.
Fog coming up from the sewers reminds me of good seed sown among the weeds:
"The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful" (Matthew 13:7)

Tangent | Reviewer: Leah | 10/5/07
Thom's voice/view is always gentle and stinging simultaneously. If he tried too hard to get his point across & make everything clear, it would take away the punch and the soothing simplicity. I think that's what I love about Radiohead most. The lyrics are like the music behind them - meandering and perfect where they are, for "some odd reason". :)
it makes sense... | Reviewer: sol | 6/23/07
I think that it makes sense to you depending on what you have been experiencing... to me it makes perfect sense... those memories... that haunt your house, your mind... that seem to be unwashable... those people that will ever be there... memories waiting behind the door, waiting to attack... it makes perfect sense...
stunning | Reviewer: canary | 2/17/07
I prefer the live version, just thom & piano. Not sure why this song is so moving, it makes no sense to me but I too get emotional over it sometimes
