Chicken Drownings | Reviewer: Zeikial | 4/3/08
The real story behind this song is about a man who drown chickens and Ol' Philly saw him do it. He was so outraged about the chicken drownings so he wrote this song as a memorial to the chickens and to confront the chicken drowner about his chicken drownings. Philly was so pissed about the chicken drownings that he said in the song he would not even lend a hand to the chicken drowner if he saw him drowning. So in conclusion, its not about marriage, shipwreck, or murders. IT IS ALL ABOUT CHICKEN DROWNINGS AND THE MAN HE SAW DROWNING CHICKENS!!

PLEASE shut up about how you know why Phil Collins wrote this song unless you had a god damn heart to heart conversation with the guy and he told you how he witnessed a murder he couldnt tell anyone about...don't assume or believe any word of mouth bullshit like the song or hate the song and project the lyrics whichever way feels right to you and stop preaching about how Phil Collins feels .

this is without a doubt his best song. the cadburys advert has, i think, ruined this song and has made it famous again for all the wrong reasons. people listen to it know and think.. hey, that's the song from the cadbury advert.. when they should think.. that's the song by phill collins.. i hate when adverts do that >:(

Murder in the air tonight | Reviewer: Suzanne Bohme | 11/14/07
Many people have a different theory than I do about the lyrics of this song, and their meaning.
I heard, many years ago, that Phil Collins witnessed a Murder-but for some reason could not help.He sent a ticket to the killer, front row.And sang the song to him.Thereby confronting him,and telling him that he saw him committing the murder.I think the lyrics are too powerful to not be significant.
In the Air Tonight | Reviewer: Sandy | 9/24/07
This song isn't about him seeing someone drown! It is about the breakdown of his first marriage. If you read the lyrics correctly you can see the hurt and anger and see where he is coming from. I don't know where him seeing a child drowning came from but it's not true!
Myth | Reviewer: Aaron | 8/28/07
These stories about shipwrecks and Phil Collins seeing someone drown are false. He refuted them in a statement:
"I don't know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it's obviously in anger. It's the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, 'Did you really see someone drowning?' I said, 'No, wrong'. And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate. It's so frustrating, 'cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I've ever written that I really don't know what it's about, you know."
Not a shipwreck | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/16/07
He wrote this song because of what happened when he was a child. He witnessed another child drowning, but was too young to do anything about it. But, as the child was drowning, he looked across the river, and there was an adult that stood and did nothing, when he could have saved the child. So, he tracked that man down, invited him to a concert (the man had no clue that Phil knew what he had done), sat him in the front row, and sang directly to him.
