you have no idea | Reviewer: sis of Cpl. Holland USMC | 6/27/07

yes, even tho eddie vedder, knows how to capture our pain, our hopes, our fears, of the USMC, to come knocking on our door to tell us, one of our beloved ones has passed away. fighting for our freedom and keeping us protected, while we sleep safe at night. we will NEVER, EVER know what they went through or what they saw. but it was their decision to join up in the military. and we HAVE to support what they thought was right. we OWE it to them. OHH-RAH AND SEMPER FI..TIL DEATH DO US PART. I think of our men everyday and pray for their families. you just don't KNOW THE PAIN....

Haunting | Reviewer: bfreder576748@aol.com | 6/6/07

This song is haunting..Vedders voice is hypnotic and the Hendricks styling of the music is pure genius!!

Song's Meaning | Reviewer: Nav | 5/4/06

Just found this on another site when trying to find the meaning behind the song.... Think it makes perfect sense......

For the most part the lyrics in this song are irrelevant. The song was written by Mike McCready and Eddie just made up the words as he went along. Eddie's voice is supposed to be more of an instrument by using improvised words, the words are never the same in concert. Ledbetter refers to Eddie's friend from Chicago named Tim Ledbetter. If there is any meaning to the lyrics I think the letter in the beginning of the song refers to the telegrams that we sent to the families of soldiers KIA in WWII. The telegrams were so distinct that many families didn't have to open them to know what they said. In the song I see a family sitting on a porch when a man comes to deliver a telegram and the family is so devestated about their loss that they cannot even bear to open it.

Some insight to Yellow Ledbetter | Reviewer: keith L | 4/2/06

Eddie Vedder and bassist Jeff Ament, and lead guitarist Mike McCready wrote the song. One of the very few songs McCready gets credit for writing. McCready used some of Jimi Hendrix guitar style from "Little Wing" and "May This Be Love".

The song's name is derived from the actual name of an old friend of lead singer Eddie Vedder from Chicago, named Tim Ledbetter.

There are official lyrics for this song, as well as many unofficial ones on various websites. It is because of the freeform nature of this song that allows Pearl Jam to easily improvise the song and change it around as they see fit when performing it live.

Lets start at the top of the lyrics. The theme of the song is the rememberance of female who has died by finding an opened letter on a porch. Not sure if the letter was to "her" or from "her". This letter brings back old memeories of "her". One memory is of her on a beach of weathered sand. Weathered sand is ironic of being an old memory. Then, on a weekend..., she is remembered again and wishes he didn't have that memory and he cries out in pain wishing the memory was gone. "And they called and I said..." Someone called him on the phone and it sprang the memory of "her" again, and he called out again says he remembered her again and wishes he didn't have that memory and he cries out in pain wishing the memory was gone. Then some thoughts are left out about "the reason" but "not a boxer of the bag" is an old saying. Can't fight your way out of a paperbag says one is weak. So the hes not the boxer or the bag tells that he is trying to be strong about "her" passing away and that since he's trying to be strong should make "her" feel calm about him when she looks down from heaven. Can you see them out on the porch.... again is another memory of "her" and others on a front porch. Them not waving brings the thought of them not remembering who he is anymore, and since he is having that thought, he's trying to put the memory behind him. This front porch he finds the letter at is the same front porch he remembers "her" at, and is there at the porch rmembering "her" and he feels he doesn't want to stay there standing at that porch and these painful memeories make him cry. He says there's something else which could be another memory and he wants to drum it all away means again he wants to forget "her". Then he has the weak feeling and trying to be strong about it all and sees the porch memory of her again and they not waving back so they have forgotten him. Then he says he doesn't want to stay at the porch alone.

This is what all I see in the lyrics. Hope it helps out.
K

No other song can make you feel so wonderful | Reviewer: Soraya | 5/4/05

When I heard this song for the very fisrt time, I didn't understood the lyrics, but its melody, the guitar, the beatiful but powerful singing of Eddie Vedder captivated all my senses. I strongly believe that you can hear this song in heaven. It may sound strange but when you think about passion and sensibilty you are thinking of this song.
