Our societal structure is based upon getting ahead by accumulating wealth, objects, and status. No matter how much we accumulate, we continue to have these needs that go unfulfilled. This puts us into a position that is distressing. Why work at a mundane job and collect the societal trappings of success if it doesn't make us any happier? Perhaps we believe this process will eventually extinguish obsession, once we've got everything we want. Since it is impossible to have everything we want, this song posits killing the desire at the root of our impulses. While that may not be any more achievable, it is at least consoling to think that someone can come along and take our obsessions away, leaving us in peace, wanting for nothing.
