The Reviews about Build God, Then We'll Talk (page 3/ 15)
------ performed by Panic! At The Disco

My own meaning... | Reviewer: Yoeko | 1/7/09

This is beautiful, to put it simply, and it does refer to the Sound of Music, though I'm not sure that was Panic!'s point behind it. In stating "there's no" before "raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses" Panic! talks about the simplicity and purity of intimacy. Roses do refer to sex, but the romantic side of it (it's not all about boning someone), and the red of roses in making love refers to the virgin blood shed, and the white dresses refer to the purity of virgins, or physically the white wedding dress, representing purity. Again by the "there's no", Panic! talks about how we live in a society where girls are getting married after they've slept with someone, or a few someones, (whether it their future husband or not). The line "it's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses" can refer to many things. "Sleeping with roaches" could be basically sleeping with people who just want you for a moment or two, then toss you aside when you stop being fun or necessary, or it could be sleeping with diseased ridden men (STD's). "Taking best guesses" could be refering back to STD's or the chance that the young woman could get pregnant or that she'll not even get paid. "At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains" most likely refers to the blood shed along with the Lawyer losing it before the Virgin. Like others have stated before me, a caricature is an abstract, but still represents the reality in an often humerous way. A "caricature of intimacy" is talking about the sex between the Lawyer and the Virgin which is strictly about getting a boner and getting paid (respectively). Originally sex was a romantic commitment to one person, and one person only. So the caricature is an abstract of how sex used to be, when now it's about having sex with a lot of people. To hopefully clear a few ideas, the Mrs. didn't commit suicide. "She was fixing her face in a compact. There was a terrible crash/between her and the badge. She spilled her purse and her bag, and held a "purse" of a different kind" is a rather confusing passage, but in no way does it say the wife commited suicide. She was simply putting on her make-up (could have been anywhere) when she noticed the "'purse' of a different kind" which may mean anything. Could be a piece of lingerie that wasn't hers, or she may have realized finally why her husband was being so shady. In any case, she found out what was going on. But if you link "terrible crash between her and the badge" it could have simply meant that she knew all along, "which would partially explain why Panic! used the line "the Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney/moonlighting aside, she really needs his money" (it's rather confusing how those two different lines are blended together and why Panic! states cheating attorney, not just attorney, when refering to the wife), and she finally confronted her husband, resulting in an argument, the "terrible crash" that could have ended their relationship. Overall the song is about a young Virgin who sold herself to a lustful Lawyer for money and his wife who knew nothing of his cheating, or who just stood aside for her husband. Anyway... that's my guess on what certain confusing lines mean in a deeper sense.

I think this song is about a young girl a hooker probably who needs money badly for one thing or another so she gives up being a virgin to sleep with a rich lawyer in return for his money causing his wife to murder herself when she finds out. the girl is extremely guilty so like they said she spills her purse she accidentally tells the truth about what she has done. When they say raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses and sleeping with roaches they mean she slept with some dirty man for money leaving herself feeling to guilty to wear a white wedding dress meaning a symbol of purity. A caricature of intimacy means people draw out a picture of truth to hide behind there lies, like how a caricature is a funny cartoon picture that only looks vaguely like the person it is based on. Saying sometimes a lie can look like the truth.

The song does have a deep meaning. It is a story of how a virgin is lost and desperate for something as trivial as money. She delves into the previously unrecognized to her evils of lust fulfillment. The Lawyer is cheating on his wife and agrees to give her the money in return for sex. Meanwhile, the lawyer's wife commits suicide upon finding out about this. The story depicts 2 sad meanings. The first being the Lawyer and the cost of his mistake. he let his lust get control of him and it cost him his wife. The second is the story of the virgin. She had no other option she could see. She went against her own God and morals and sold her virginity. Her guilt haunted her and caused her to worry an immense amount. The weight of this burden was so great, she even tripped, thus, spilling the contents of her bag. This is not relevant as a physical evidence, but as a metaphor for her trying to hide what she had done, but it spilled out, or, was pushed out by the sheer mental/emotional/psychological weight of the fact that she had done such an awful thing.

the part about rain drops on roses and girls in white dresses is a quote from "my favorite things", a song from "the sound of music". i think your reading too much into it. im pretty sure they're just being sarcastic about they're "favorite things". i love songs like this where you have to have knowledge about other musicals and songs to really understand the meaning. it makes the song much more significant.

You guys are missing the point! This song is totally about sex traffickers! And how people become hookers because they need money to survive and can't make it any other way. It's so sad. The other day I found a thing about this on digg. It was really scary/sad

I do know what the lyrics mean and they have a profound message but even without paying attention to that this song is beautiful and you can sense the feeling and power behind it. Sometimes when I belt out with it, I have to fight back tears because of the intensity of this gorgeous song.

Thank you soooo much, Panic!
