I've given the lyrics much thought over the years, this song has been a continued one on all my playlists and I believe it isn't about any single topic, not drugs, not love, not mnetal illness, nor any combination. I have begun to believe it is spoken to the listener in a voice that almost everyone can relate to, I believe it is about the idea that we are all our own enemies and not matter what vice or issue you have you feel the need to get away from yourself and/or the subject in question, these feelings cause paranoia and general fear, confusion and self-loathing, all of which are included in the songs lines in equal amounts. Be it crack, a bad break up or work related stress we all have night were we are sitting on the bed and lying wide awake and most people have demons in their head that are more than they can take. The lyrics are sublime in a paranoid ideal. Bottom line -- whatever it is, he is blaming whatever that mistake is for what's happening to him. I relate, too... but not because of paranoia.
