Smoothness redefined! | Reviewer: Archana Ramana | 10/12/2007
‘What am I to you’ follows true jazz tradition while keeping with Jones’ style of incredibly smooth and comforting music. The track begins with the bass guitar which is soon joined by an undulating lead with conspicuous strokes, creating a surprisingly upbeat yet relaxed feeling. The drums roll in, blending in with the mood and gets you tapping your feet. Jones’ refreshingly deep and airy voice begins the verse, the buoyant music continuing in the background. Her voice and style lend authenticity to the lyrics. It is the classic case of the lover who’s ready to give her all, has infact given her all, and now has nothing but questions and a longing for reciprocation. The bass line compliments the song, more than just giving it the fullness it is meant to. There is a change of mood in the third, fourth and fifth verses, a heightened sense of longing caused by the sustained notes and the perfectly matched seconds. A classic riff appears in between that fits in really well. The track descends to its casual smoothness in the last verse.
