------ performed by Nirvana
Smells Like Teen Spirit | Reviewer: Chris | 4/2/08
Well, to start off with I have to say that I discovered Nirvana through Smells Like Teen Spirit, I'd heard many of their songs before, but eventually sometime when I listened to SLTS I had to go and look up the band, but don't take me for one of those dumbass posers who know them for only this song and think they need to wear the merchandise and listen to just the same fucking song over and over. As I said before, yeah I got into Nirvana through this song, but since them I've done all the research I can on them. I've read and watched numerous biographies on Kurt and I've bought their albums and listened to the lyrics of their songs. So I haven't been with the band since they began, but I know what they stood for and I can respect that.
I have to agree with Merlin on this song, Kurt hated the spotlight, he probably would've just wanted to stay an underground band that makes their own music. The music corporations are part of what pushed him over the edge. I remember a TV bio that said that when In Utero was finished he had finally acheived the sound that he'd been looking for all that time, but the music corporations thought it wouldn't sell, so he was forced to change it back. Kurt made music cause that's what his passion was, and what he did best. He once said that he had the most respect for Michael Stipe (the lead singer of R.E.M.) because he was able to make the music that he wanted and wasn't controlled by the music industry. He was doing exactly what Kurt wanted to do, but unfortunately Kurt couldn't handle the pressure of being famous.
So yes, I love this song, mainly because of that guitar riff, let's face it, it fucking rocks. And yes the lyrics are strange and none of us will ever know what they mean because none of us are Kurt Cobain. And I have to agree with some other people on this, that this is just their pop song. If you're just getting into Nirvava, then listen to something more like About a Girl, or Polly, and Lithium is another good one. So quit worrying about how good or not good this song is and just enjoy the fucking music, if you don't like this song, don't listen to it. Nirvana has many more that are much different from this, go back to the blues. And don't hate the band because of one fucking song, because they really are revolutionary.
Good song but..... | Reviewer: whoever you want me to be | 4/3/08
This is a great song but the meaning is slightly construde. I have heard many, many different tellings of the core meaning to this song and most cant comply with the others. This song has a great beat and is nice to listen to but Weird Al had a point when he wrote "Smells Like Nirvana" that this song makes no sense and is very incoherent.

I'm a lyricist for an up and coming band. I'd like to say that if their music could be explained it wouldn't be art now would it? I've heard it said that Kurdt wrote many of his songs just minutes before recording. Smells like Teen Spirit was only performed live once(to raise gas money for a trip to their new label's recording studio) and never again. If Nirvana were still around today I think their sound would've been diluted into the pop rock we find ourselves forced to listen to. The death of Cobain kinda ensured that that would'nt happen. Maybe the words only had meaning to Kurdt himself and the rest of Nirvana? We could argue about meaning forever cause Kurdt is'nt gonna tell us. So just enjoy, it's what he would've wanted.

a song is not a song with out lyrics... the person that writes them it must mean something to them ... deep down there is always part of them in there people just don't relies that most of the time

I'm a 18-year-old Japanese.
I've been crazy about NIRVANA since I met this song exactly last year.
It's hard to understand English, but I'm happy that I could know them while I am a teenager.
Well... It imports little for me to know the meaning of their songs but I won't forget what I felt through them.
Ah-, I want to say more, but my English is poor.
Anyway, thankyou NIRVANA for telling me what real music is.
real kurt cobain | Reviewer: merlin | 1/30/08
great song, sure. but come on.
i see this song as the death of kurt cobain.
he never wanted the lifestyle this song gave him. everyone listened to it, even people who didn't like this style of music. people say that that's a good thing, but it isn't.
people would listen to it and not even know who it was by or who kurt cobain was.
and for those of you who say the lyrics aren't important, thats rubbish. because kurt was a genious. of music, and of words. his lyrics blow my mind. especially heart shaped box and aero zeppelin - my favourite song.
and if you want good music? listen to songs like aneurysm. ever wonder why they never made it? because people wouldn't listen to it because it's not 'catchy' or 'pop'.
that's the only reason smells like teen spirit made it. because anyone would listen to it. that just doesn't seem important enough.
incesticide was a cry for help! and to shake the burden of fame. that's the real kurt cobain. we will never forget you.

I think this song is, as the title suggests, a representation of teenagers. The whole song kind of flips about much like the attention and interests of teens. At first it seems like a bunch of kids joking around about guns and violence and such. Then it quickly changes to what seems like a guy and girl together confused about sex and how to do it right.
The chorus, to me, is about self-confidence. If you're one of those kids who stands out, you'll probably be picked on. Being less dangerous with the lights out seems like the need to hide themselves and fit in teens usually feel. Here we are now, entertain us reminds me of the way teens sass adults and think they are the center of the world. Kind of nonchalant about everything. The next line "I feel stupid, and contagious" reminds me of how teens are usually belittled by authority figures (parents, teachers, cops, etc); especially if they are rebels. You know how it is, "he's a bad apple, a cancer to his peers, he's not going anywhere in life..." then snap the attention back to themselves and flip their thoughts around randomly from racism, blending in and being small and annoying, as seen by others (Mulatto, Albino, Mosquito respectively). Being the Teens they are, they always come back to sex.
The next part seems a bit confusing but underneath, I think the lyrics imply how teens appreciate they can be carefree and get away with it and that their friends now will last forever.
Repeat Chorus
The next segment just seems like the way Teens try and get their message across only to be misunderstood by "the man" so they eventually give up, being the nonchalant, carefree spirits they are.
Repeat chorus
A denial x9 just seems to be how Teens feel denied of responsibilities (why can't I buy liquor? Why can't I buy smokes? etc). Since they seem to happen everywhere at that age, repetition is effective.
I just went through this phase of life myself and looking back, a lot of that seems to fit...but music, like art (especially when music is art; like this song), is meant to be interpreted by people differently.
NOt what you think... | Reviewer: Brent | 1/14/08
The line..." Here we are now, entertain us," is something Kurt used to say when he'd go to parties. He'd be like, "You invited us here, and we're here, so entertain us." He says this in the Rolling Stone interview about 3 months before he died.
Kurts video for it | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/8/08
it is indeed a janitor representing kurt because he dropped out of the highschool and got hired there as a janitor and plus i kinda do think it is a hooker... listen to it closely im so stupid it is CONTAGIOUS here we are now ENTERTAIN us.
