this song rocks | Reviewer: chris | 11/20/08
ya so what its true and to think otherwise is stupid don't let other people influence your opinion if you hear something great it beats michael jackson thats for sure. the nevermind album is just amazing i like songs like this one, lithium, drain you, breed, come as you are, don't get much better than that, you all have also mentioned alot of great ones, glad to see so many nirvana fans because no one likes nirvana more and other than me (haha) where i come from.
:) Are we trying to understand the lyrics again? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/15/08
Basically, I was 13 when the song came out, and we spent the next decade trying to decode the poetry of Cobain.
I always thought he was talking about male adolesence and sex. Teen spirit was a deodorant, and alot of people lose their virginity in the dark, and its awkward.
For better, more fulfilling Nirvana poetry decoding, I suggest "Heart-Shaped Box" or "Lithium".

Kurt Cobain, when a painter paints a painting, if it is his greatest accomplishment (at the time) he will never feel it complete without showing it to someone. Its not that you want to be recognized and praised, but you want to say, I made this, it's all mine. Kurt Cobain may have hated media and fame, but he loved music more than his hate, his music would never be complete until he put it on an album and had it released. If he'd wanted to stop so badly, he would have. I don't know if he killed himself, but I know he loved music, and was talented. People need to give him respect in that he was a musician, an artist and a creator. Some take it too far and act like he is a god, thats too far. He was an awesome guy, and a couple other things were thrown in there as well.

My opinion is that Smells like Teen Spirit is a great song that I think anyone can get into but I don't think it's their greatest. Just like what Evan said, a lot of people like Nirvana solely on this song and had not considered great songs like Lithium, Come As You Are, or About a Girl. Nirvana is one of my favorite bands of all time and Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of my favorite songs by them. It's just not their greatest.
a song with impact | Reviewer: ben | 8/13/08
in my opinion i dont think a single song has meant more to the musical world more than smells like teen spirit but that isnt neccessarily a good thing. alot of bad things happened just because of this song. as some of you have pointed out this song pretty much killed kurt cobain. with this song nirvana catapulted to stardom which kurt did not cope well with. this song also led to the rise of lousy post grunge bands and the commercialization and formulization of alternative rock. now these are certainly bad things but alot of great things happened as a result of this song. for one it popularized grunge which led to the popularity of alice in chains, soundgarden and pearl jam. and without this song nirvana wouldnt have been able to share their amazing music with the world on such a grand scale. without smells like teen spirit we would have gotten into grunge through some band that came around later and wrote their own teen spirit style hit. of course the actual song is really great is that guitar intro the greatest hook ever or what? sure this song caused some bad things but the ones not related to kurt wouldve happened anyway cuz like i said someone else wouldve broken big under the influence of grunge.

I love Nirvana more than any other band but I cant stand this song. this song is just a stupid popular song used to get people to buy thier albums and then hear there other songs that they take pride in. this song isnt like any of kurts other songs and he just abandoned it when people started listening to there music. After a certain point kurt refused to play this song at concerts including MTV unplugged. This song was just a megaphone they used to get people to appreciate what they were really about. Whether they ment to use it like that or not I don't know but that is what it did.
a lot of misconceptions about this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/15/08
This song is not about teen angst, or anything even remotely close.. Cobain's been on record as saying that he has no idea how a song named after a girls deodorant could ever be considered an anthem for the disgruntled youth movement..
The song was typical Cobain "verse, chorus, verse" style (his words, not mine).. It got it's name because during one of his sleeping binges a friend came to his apartment and while Cobain slept he jokingly spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the wall.. Teen Spirit was a popular product at the time..This stuff is all documented..
It's also not entirely true that Cobain didn't want the attention..He was aware of how he would be perceived, but he also knew that he had a real talent in writing a catchy tune.. He knew that talent would result in high sales.. So he was aware of the possible perception of him in the underground punk world- but don't kid yourselves, Kurt took full advantage of all the benefits his unique talent provided..
It's also not true that many of the songs were written minutes before recording..Sure, Cobain may have given the impression that they were a free spirit, punk group that just happened to strike it big- against their wishes- but it's well known that Cobain was intense about practice.. They practiced 10 hours a day.. Again, all documented.. That's NOT a free flowing artist.. Nevermind was one of the most "produced" albums ever to come out of the music industry.. that doesn't make it bad- it's a very influential piece of musical history.. But it was a painstaking process to write, produce and perfect.. Cobain was well aware of the potential Nevermind had- which is why he orchestrated the breaking of their contract with Sub Pop to sign with Geffen.. Geffen would promote the album much better than Sub Pop ever could.. Kurt wanted it out there..
It's also not true that the music executives made Nirvana change In Utero.. Cobain himself felt it wouldn't sell, so after the album was finished he brought in another producer to re-produce the album and make it more "polished"..
Hey, I like the band, always have- but Cobain was what he was.. A heroin addict with a knack for recognizing and writing a catchy ass tune - or as he himself called it "verse, chorus, verse".. Why can't we just accept him as that?
just listen | Reviewer: ali | 6/22/08
i admit i got into Nirvana because of this song, but it doesn't mean you should judge a band by one song. Nirvana made more than like 50 songs, each different. The song has a catchy tune, a more popular pop song that probably everyone likes. People should listen to songs like "Lithium", "Do re mi", and "Polly" to get the feel of what Nirvana means. You have to do the research before you can say anything.

this song was the death of Kurt Cobain. I hate how people say hey love/hate Nirvana based on this song. If you want real Nirvana, listen to You Know You're Right, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, Territorial Pissings, and Something In the Way
