It's almost painful to say that this isn't Nirvana's greatest achievement (I'm listening to it right now actually), but realistically.... I think the reason it's so popular is that aside from the fact that it's obviously one of Nirvana's best and most important songs, the mixing of Nevermind couldn't have been more perfect. It has a VERY powerful intro, and it's just a really strong song to start the record with. Also there's the fact that first impressions last a lifetime, and I'm sure people who popped this in when they got it payed the closest attention to the first song. It's just too bad that so many other songs in which Kurt's genius is evident had to suffer for it. His best work, lyrically speaking anyway, comes from songs like Lithium, You Know You're Right (prolly my favorite song of theirs), In Bloom, All Apologies, Sappy ( CHECK IT OUT!!! ), Something In the Way, Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me and Dumb. Very Ape is really fun to listen to as well. The hard thing about being a Nirvana fan is being restricted to say, your top five songs.... Top thirty is still a relative challenge. I'd also like to say that you need not worry about me being a fake, as I do own Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero, Sliver, Live and Unplugged, Nirvana and With the Lights Out (still gotta get the Wishkah though). Sorry about my lack of coverage on Bleach, it's really a very underrated album, and it shouldn't be. But then again, you listen to Nevermind and it's hard not to overshadow everything else... Anyway, the bottom line is Teen Spirit is an excellent song, and it deserves all the attention it has. It's really more a matter of other songs not getting equal attention, but this song shouldn't take beatings for its popularity. If you all have never heard "pen cap chew", i suggest you get their box set and listen to it. It kicks ass!!!! "Come as you are" also should be included on this list as well.
