Put allot of thought into this song because I love to sing it. And I love how it putt's the listener on the spot.
You simply cant help but hear it and think about the day of judgment. I think the song is very clear. The only questionable part is the part about the forth of July. Some have said that this means that the writer thought That our founding fathers were going to hell. This is complete rubbish!
Well it may very well be that the writer was just looking for a creative rhyme. But it DOES have a deeper meaning that I personally prefer and makes sense to me. When a believer dies and goes to heaven because of the blood covering of Jesus Christ he or she has been liberated (set free) having won his independence form a world of sin and death. We celebrate the forth of July (Independence day) To mark and celebrate how we have been set free from the heavy yoke of British rule. We know by reading the book of revelations that on the day of judgment God raises everyone from the dead to be judged. The dead who did not go to heaven are in a waiting place much like hell. But they are not in the lake of fire yet. That's why it says see them again till the forth of July. At which time they will be thrown into the lake of fire and we will never see them again. And so the Forth of July is just a metaphor for the day of judgment when God sets everything straight by weeding out the bad folks from the good folks who have won there Independence (Through faith in Christ) from a world of sin and death.
I hope this helps everyone to better understand the true meaning of this song.
It may not be the meaning that the writer intended but everything happens for a reason and I think that God had His hand in this one.
But what do I know lol.

Lake of Fire was a song that came out in 1983 by the Meat Puppets. Nirvana covered the song during MTV's unplugged because Meat Puppets were the band he was playing with. Kurt was an incredibly talented musician. He was not misunderstood, he was a drug addict!

"You are all terribly wrong. This song was origonally written as a poem by Geore Washington. I believe it was somewhere between his first presidency and his participation in the Gulf War. Regardless of the date written, Bon Jovi stumbled upon this poem in his 8th grade history class, and began jaming to it. He finished his work on the song around October 2009. Needless to say, we all know the sour relationship between Bon Jovi and Cobain. Cobain thought it'd be comical to play it.
Just like to reiterate that you're all wrong!"
I hope that was all sarcastic otherwise you must be legally retarded.

To the "whatever" titled review, you are a huge jackass. There is like 3 million people in America alone and saying that nobody could relate to him is like saying we all have perfect little suburban lives. So how about you shut up and stop being such a prick.

It's not accurate to say that there are no people, that could relate to Kurt.
I think many people relate to him on some level , but what Kurt had was special - he had a brilliant mind, a great poethic, musical gift and, perhaps most importantly, the charisma and voice to stand out from the crowd. That's what made him the spokesman of a generation.

Haha
"I've said it many times before and I'll say it again-No one ever could or ever will relate to Kurt Cobain."
Basically you mean you could not relate to Kurt Cobain. It would be extremely unlikely that anyone could ever be that unique to not have someone that relates to them in the same generation, or even future generations. I don't think Kurt Cobain would have been dubbed 'the voice of generation X', and Nevermind would never have sold 26 (i think) million copies if there weren't that many people who on some level related to his music.
Even so, this is not originally his work, so i guess the point is moot.

Lake of fire and its meaning. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/31/09 is retarded | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/10/09
This wasn't a song by Nirvana neither did they change the lyrics, the originally song was by Mudhoney so in this song he had absolutly nothing with the lyrics to do... they played it live 'cause it would piss some of the MTV people and Kurt was a big fan of Mudhoney so thats that
Lake of fire and its meaning. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/31/09
I think that lake of fire is a great song, It shows you what Kurt cobain was thinking about in his very short life.
Kurt may have taken alot of different drugs, but lyrically he was a genius, there are lots of different meanings to this song.
Where do bad folks go when they die? That line leaves you thinking, makes you wonder whether there is a heaven or a hell.
For someone like me with christian beliefs, I believe in both, heaven is a place where there is light, and hell is a place of complete darkness.
Jesus clearly said: "Whoever believes in me, even though he dies, will have eternal life". I believe this to be true, I dont know whether Cobain believed in Jesus, but if I see him one day, I would hope that it would be in heaven.
Jesus also clearly said: "Depart from me, go to the lake of fire prepared for the devil and his angels since the beginning of creation". As a believer that scares me. This song I believe gives us as human beings a choice, Follow God or Follow the devil.
