The Reviews about Heart - Shaped Box (page 9/ 17)
------ performed by Nirvana

hmmm much thought... | Reviewer: completefearMASS | 10/24/07

Maybe too much thought over a great song. However, their have been many people before Kurt Kobain, and Nirvana that have been equal if not better lyricist's and songwriters. However this song is intriguing and I'll leave it up to everyone to spend their lives delving into song lyrics trying to discover what it all means. In the meantime I'm gonna actually just listen to some great music and be content with the fact that I'm not and never was the writer so I'll never "get" the songs like Kurt Kobain truly did. That is all. Have fun all of you really.

Its about men's connection to women in general | Reviewer: Tal Cerulean | 10/14/07

Prolly inspired by his wife.

'She eyes me like a picses when I'm weak'
Women know how emotionally to get in to our lives and due to Kurt's distrust of pisces the connection here makes sense.
'Locked inside ur heartshaped box for weeks'
In love/infatuation/lust basically.
'drawn into ur magnet tar pit trap'
irresistible but ultimately a trap
'I wish I could eat ur cancer when u turn black'
Expressing a juvenile desire to delve emotionally into the other person so completely that u ignore their faults (their cancer). I think it may also express a subtle desire to gloat over their emotional failure even though he knows that's as emotionally unhealthy as the relationship itself.

Then the chorus is the realization that he's now trapped, but cannot escape easily due to the emotional attachment.

'Meat eating orchids forgive noone just yet'
Sex cements the relationship, and gives the woman a claim into the man's life (since he 'took' something from her and she demands monogamy).
'Cut myself on angel's hair and babies breath'
Symbols of love now actually harming him, expressing regretting falling in 'love'.
'Broken hymen of ur highness, im left black'
He now sees through the illusion/infatuation that blinded him to her faults and controlling nature. The broken hymen is disillusionment.
'Throw down ur umbilical noose'
Wives/girlfriends control men in a similar way to the way a mother controlled them.
'So I can climb right back.'
But we always go back, and accept it.

It's certainly a negative view, but I think most men feel this way at least at some point in their relationships. Not really healthy to always look at it this way though. :)

hey... | Reviewer: mabel | 9/21/07

wait...i read that kurt wrote it about plants that resemble vaginas and that it was a sexual song "broken hymen of your highness" and also that him and courtney used to give each other heart shaped boxes.

Interpretation | Reviewer: Kakespade | 9/20/07

I believe this song is mainly about weakness. This song is about a person, like Kurt, seeing himself as weak, weakened by love to a bad and also weak person, could be inspired by Courtney. The "Heart shaped box" in which the person are being trapped being an illustration of this. Along with the "Magnet tar pit trap" which he is being dragged into. Cutting himself on angel hair and babies breath is showing how weak he has becomn. Piches is also meantioned, piches are supposed to be weak, I read somewhere.
The person is being in the shadow of the person which is loved. The word "Umbilical" is mentioned, but I do not think it refears to a biological mother, rather to a loved person who is depended on as much as a mother. He is also weakened by this person to the point where he would want to die. the noose is meantioned, which is a suicide assosiated knot. "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black" would mean that when the loved person dies from its weakness, the person singing would like to take on the weakness and die too.
The Priceless advices would be refering to how the loved person is of bad influence to the life of the person singing.

When this is said, I have read that Kurt claimed this song to be inspired by a documentary about children with cancer. I don't know whether he realy means this, as this song, being written in the late 1992 or early 1993 makes me gives me direct assosiations to Kurts wife, Courtney.

heartshaped-box | Reviewer: kat | 9/19/07

one of my favourite nirvana songs of all time....im pretty young to be a huge nirvana fan...and i hate myself for not discovering it earlier...but ive caught up and this is officially a great tune!

right | Reviewer: whatev | 9/15/07

i'm not going to pretend i know what he's talking about...

but i have the same birthday as kurt, and its kind of interesting that he starts with "she eyes me like a pisces when i am weak." he was obviously very disturbed by his astrological sign (he even mentions it in his suicide note: "stupid little pisces")... i feel a strange sort of connection with that sentiment.

what i think | Reviewer: Liz | 9/11/07

ok sorry padric but ur interpretation was kinda screwed up....i mean it would be a really good one if kurt hadn't written the song about the heart-shaped box that courtney love gave him....and also this wasn't on nevermind which was actually the biggest album so...... but still kurt was super steezy....its not fair that his life had to be so screwed up but i think he got everything he wanted to some extent...wish he was still here
RIP

lolz | Reviewer: Adam | 9/6/07

It's about a vagina, 'meat eating orchids' (flowers reminded kurt of female genitals lol), broken hymen, umbilical noose etc...

Kurt RIP | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/5/07

Very inspirational person to me. I've learned a lot about music and myself listening to his words. Very talented.

this is so deep | Reviewer: black heart | 9/3/07

this song recommends respect ! Kurt is the best song writer ever been , his songs are so deep , and it's very pleasing to see people try to understand and make interpretations of them. Kurt would have loved to see all that !
RIP KURT
