People who write things like Kurt did wanted one thing.. For you to reflect and think. Your interpritations of the song reveal more about YOU than about Kurt himself. What I think Heart Shaped Box means: There's one important line in this song that unlocks what it's about, once you realize it.. all the other lyrics fall into place. "Throw me down your umblilical noose so I can climb right back." It can only mean one thing. His mom. Climb back up into his Mother is what he's saying here. This song is about Kurt's child hood and growing up a mother's boy. But his mother was a mess. Always giving him "priceless advice" But it was all polutted by her tainted and scared world view. He was locked in a relationship with her and her greedy love. Her heart shaped box. Her endless negative conversations her "magnet tar pit trap" He wishes he could eat her cancer when she turned black, obviously a manic depressive person. But it was his mom and he loved her.. but she always gave him such bad advice. "Forever indebt to your priceless advice" This was on his first big album.. he probably wrote this way back in highschool when it was still a bit issue to him. It makes the most sense to me at any rate. It's a great song because it makes you think. And that's what Kurt wanted more than anything. My thoughts | Reviewer: Black Rabbit | 9/1/07 I think that Kurt himself would love the fact that you all have such interesting and diverse thoughts on his music, and I also think that's what he had in mind when he wrote his songs, however, I don't think this song has to do with Courtney at all, I believe this song is directed at Kurts Mother. This is signified by the lyrics "let down your Embilical noose so I can climb right back" saying how his Mother would always be there to comfort him, or the lyric "Forever in debt to your priceless advice" saying his mother raised him a certain way, but when he got older he found that that just wasn't the way life really was. Haven't we all felt "locked inside your heart shaped box" in reference to how or mothers close us off from the worl to try to protect us from the world itself...again also described by the line "cut myself on angel hair and babies breath" saying she protected him from EVERYTHING! Anyway, these are just my thoughts, and as I said, I think Kurt would love to see us talking about his music in a sense thats trying to discifer it rather than tear it down, the man was a genious poet and I'm glad more people see that. Replying to the Heart Shaped Box | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/25/07 Well the connection i see with an actual heart shaped box, may be the concept beneath the heart shaped box: a consumistic symbol of love and dedication, that we offer to the people (we think) we love..."Ive been locked inside your heart shaped box for weeks", the heart shaped box is filled with, usually, chocolates, that we eat, which may explain the several times he uses the word eat in the song"eat your cancer" "meat eating orchids(a.k.a. women)"...Heart shaped boxes may also be used as a way of asking for our loved ones forgiveness, when we feel we've done something wrong we tend to make it up to person harmed, in this case our "loved" one:"Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet Cut myself on Angel Hair and baby's breath Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back" I interpret this bit as a way of asking for forgiveness, and as a way of trying to be in "his highness" good graces again..anyway thats the way i read according to the "heart shaped box P.O.V., though quite frankly i believe the song is much deeper than a simple Heart shaped box, its about dependence on others and about the way we feel we need somebody in our lives (I have a new complaint about you, but in the end I'm glad your here), my 2cents.
