I think that this song is about how he felt like he didn't fit in, because he had a hard time in school. The easiest clique to fit into is the drug-users, all it takes for the bond is the mutual consumption of drugs. He has the greatest mind of his generation, and no other artist has even touched what he has left us with since. "I'm not like them, but I can pretend." The "I think I'm dumb," sounds like something a depressed teen with a low self-esteem would say about themselves, which describes him. Even though he was a genius he didn't fit in with the smart kids, and probably thought he was dumb. My favorite part is when he says "My heart is broke, but I have some glue, help me inhale, and mend it with you, we'll float around, and hang out on clouds, then we'll come down, and have a hangover." This part describes the connection that people that use drugs together have, its not real. All of my relationships, friends and boyfriends, have all been based on this. When the drug's effects wear off, you're just like, "I have nothing in common with this person, I have no idea who this is." You also struggle with your own identity when you compromise yourself for the sake of the company. As for Kurt not being a real musician because he likes drugs? hmmm... A musician's extra-curricular activities do not make them a "fake" musician. Does the fact that Beethoven was an alcoholic mean that he was never a real musician, aside from the fact that he is one of the most famous pianists of all time, and his work changed western classical music forever? does that make him a fake musician? no. he wasn't telling kids to huff glue, you ignorant pice you, if you knew what he was really saying and not just listening to the surface of it, you would see that he is saying that drugs are dumb, and that he made meaningless attachments to people that could never get him. you would know this, Mike, if you were infact a real musician. Real musicians analyze music and see what's under the surface. haha kurt not being a real musician but you are? hmmm...ok. I think you're opinion may be a little biased.

I'm a real musician too, and whatever derogatory term you want to throw around to people you don't like doesn't make you better, prick. I agree with Anony Mouse; confronting taboo topics is something that actually takes talent, which is something Nirvana and Kurt had.

Hey Mike down there, you "real musician", what do you sing about? Broken hearts, being in love, and alcoholism? I've heard enough of that bullshit. You're demonizing a man for singing about a taboo topic- just because you sing about it doesn't mean you advocate it. I love any band that chooses to break away from catchy lyrics that'll sure them a spot on the top 20 for a few weeks. Nirvana managed to do that- they're popular because they're actually talented, something few artists can claim.

This song is about the bliss that ignorant drugs can bring- you're dumb for doing them, they make you dumb while you're high, but they enable you to be happy with whatever you have. Apply that how you will. I'm 16 and living in inner city Chicago, to me this song fits anyone using drugs to cope with their problems. Drug use is an issue that transcends class, nationality, race, religion- and you're just being a bad lyricist if you ignore it.

Sniffing glue is dumb, i would know. But so are you mike, for not understanding that Kobain wasn't advocating drugs, he was saying that they make you dumb, and that ignorance can be bliss, but it's hard to tell sometimes, especially when your dumb. When your broken hearted sometimes you just want to escape, float on clouds, but when you come down, everything is still waiting there for you. That's what he's saying with this song. I doubt that you are a real musician mike. For a start you can't even spell the word. And secondly you would know that it's not a musician's job to make people understand their songs, that's up to them.
Any musician or artist can appreciate a beautiful song, and the emotion behind it, without worrying to much about the source.
They say that the great artists feel emotions so keenly that they are often overwhelmed by them, hence the plethora of suicides amongst the great artists, writers, poets and musicians throughout history. But their words and music live on, which is more than can be said for many of us.

Kurt Cobain was what we real mnusicans call a junkie death-freak scumbag. "Let's sniff some glue" - what a bastard, suggesting glue-sniffing as a cure for depression to vulnerable kids. Yeah, I know depression too - you deal with it like a person who actually wants to live a decent life, or you live like Kurt and suffer the consequences. Blowing our your brains or sniffing glue are for losers. Bye-bye Kurt, and good bloddy riddance.

This is my favorite Nirvana song.....I also can relate to the song. Kurt Cobain is one of my few "Idols"......I live my life by his quote "It is better to burn out than to fade away". People please stop arguing over how he died.....it is pointless to do it now......it was over 16 years ago. Let his music live on and his soul rest in peace.

The two horrible years, when I felt like.. shit. I was depressed, I had a suicide attempt behind me, my dad was horrible to me - nothing to speak more deeply in a songrewiev - but I still had to get up, every morning.

Well, He comitted suicide cause of a mental illness, Cronical Stomac Suffer and was classified BD (Bipolar Disorder) As an Adult.
However, he was a heavy Heroin Addict as well.

well, i think im the youngest on here writing on this, being 13 and all but anyway, i love the song because its true people call you stupid when you act different then them, but in truth your happier than they'll ever be. the fighting over what the song means doesnt make sense to me, its sad because he loved music so much he grew up in a broken house this is all that he had to look forward to. music make him happy, but why are we fighting over what meant the world to him?
