Many Meaning | Reviewer: Young Poet | 3/8/09
In my opinion, the song could take a series of meanings, as Kurt Cobain said. I believe that he stated it in this way because sometimes when writers write, even at young ages, their words are sometime oblivious to even themselves. I have been writing poems since elementary. In middle school, my teacher wanted to have some of my poems published. And as someone would look over it, they could not image that a 7th grader wrote what I had written. But what I can say is that the articulation in this song is superb. I see the song as a past debacle with the writer and one of his friends or it could even be a drug. Somewhere in him he felt a repletion of pain, almost a surprise that the person/thing wronged him so deeply. "Come as you are, as you were", could mean approach me naturally and show me your true colors without changing who you really are. It seems as if he doesn’t want the person to change, probably because he was so close to them for a long time and harm from that person came as a surprise. So in a since it comes off as revenge, not only with (And I swear I don’t have a gun, but “Come doused in Mud, soaked in Bleach, as I want you to be”. Why would he want a person to be doused in mud or soaked in bleach if they haven’t hurt him? I don’t think he meant it as revenge, but after a while when the person just became a memory instead of an active person in his life, it was probably hard for him to cope with having a non-active friendship. Maybe he and his friend saw one another everyday and he forces himself to not speak to them.
You know this type of friendship when you’re friends for many years and a day and the next day you all have fallen out over something he/she have done. It had probably gotten so bad that he did not even know how him and his friend came to a reclusion from one another. One may not want to, but start to dislike, even hate that person because maybe they did not act mature about the situation and come forth after hurting his feelings. Therefore “As a friend, as an old enemy” could have meant that Cobain did not want to see this person as an enemy because if he did, they would have been an enemy to him the entire time of that close friendship. “Take your time, hurry up, choice is yours, don’t be late” means if the person wants to apologize, don’t rush and say it in sincerity, but hurry up because it might be too late if they wait. “ As a trend, as a friend” is a beautiful simile. A trend can go out of style easily like fashion and so did his friendship, hence it being a “memeoria” because it is now dead. Lastly “ I swear that I don’t have a gun”, means that the person knows that they did something extremely wrong to this writer and this is his reassurance to them that he’s not going to get upset and bash them like they expect. Instead, he’s accepting them as who they are. He may have forgave them, but that strong friendship is dead (memoria).

I don't think that this is a love song. I tend to see the utmost sarcastic mocking tones in nirvana songs. Almost every song that isn't self loathing is sarcastic, so i wouldn't take face meanings into consideration if i was trying to decide what this song was about. Personally.. it probably has something to do with drugs, because of the soaked in bleach part, but maybe the song is a reminiscant story of maybe regret for not appreciating simplicity. The I don't have a gun could be the author trying not to seem threatening, but it also could be a denial of being suicide. People lie. If i was planning on killing myself. I would deny it. I would deny everything. I think that's the reason Kurt's songs had the feel they had.
My own interpretation. | Reviewer: Some dude | 2/6/09
This is just me, but the lyrics sum up perfectly my feelings for a someone that I've fallen out with and how I really want to make things right again.
The line "come as you are" is pleading this someone to come back into the speakers life because he misses her. The lines such as "as a friend, a trend, an old memory, an old enemy, doused in mud, etc," is the speaker saying that he wants her (or anyone, who knows) back in his life no matter how the person feels about him.
The song to me is really about asking a former lover for forgiveness, and the line "I swear I don't have a gun," is a promise that the speaker is ready to forgive, does not hold any past grudges, and just wants peace.
Of course I'm not saying Kurt was a romantic kinda musician, or that this is some sorta love song. That was just the feeling I get from the song.

i always saw the lines "i dont have a gun" as him stating hes actually pretty damn close to suicide, or being accused of being close to it.
going from this point of view you can interpret the song in two ways: Kurt needing what all people need when theyre down, a friend, and not some retard with hollow promisses (so come as a friend, but also as an enemy who isnt afraid of telling you the truth).
2nd meaning: hes sick of the pretenders in the world.
Memory-uh or Memoria? | Reviewer: TheMaestro | 12/20/08
This word is closely linked to (and sounds like) memoriam. which is a reference to death. It reminds me of the poem by Tennyson with the same name, and the most oft-quoted lines in the poem are perhaps:
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
The last two lines are usually taken, out of context, as offering advice on the dissolution of a romantic relationship. However the lines actually refer to the death of a beloved friend.
I don't know how relevant this is because I cant say whether Kurt had read this poem, but it's interesting all the same and helps me to appreciate the song and it's lyrics more...
Interpretation is what you make it... | Reviewer: TheMaestro | 12/20/08
First off I want to say that I think this is one of the best songs ever. What does it mean? Well, as kurt said, this song can be interpreted in any way you like...it means what you want it to mean. For me this song has been difficult to interpret. At first I thought it was simply about being yourself...but the words "known enemy" seem to suggest that it could be about revenge against a friend who has betrayed him. He says to come over, and that he doesn't have a gun...which for me implies that he actually does or why would he say it, and repeat it. Anyway these are just some ideas...

The song can be interpreted as Jesus speaking through Kurt.:
“Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be.”
"as a friend as a known enemy" - Christ died for us while we were still sinners (Rom 5:8)
“Take your time, hurry up, choice is yours, don't be late.” – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Heb 13:8)
”Take a rest, as a friend, as an old memory” - Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Mat 11:28)
”Come doused in mud” (bad) “soaked in bleach” (good)
“as I want you to be” (just be yourself)
”As a trend” (who are you trying to impress?),
“as a friend, as a old memory” (forgiveness)
"And I swear I don't have a gun"
People are reluctant to accept Christ because they misunderstand his purpose; experiencing fear rather than love.
But the truth is: Jesus is your friend and saviour; all He wants is for you to come to Him -exactly as you are.
Come as You Are | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/25/08
Words I live by everyday. People see me and thats what they get, they don't get anything else but who I am. I think the lyrics are just be yourself but to Kurt who knows what they mean? Kurt said once in an interview "They mean what you want them to." and almost every Nirvana song lets you interpret them as they apply to you which is the beauty of Nirvana and why Kurt, Krist, Dave, Chad, Pat and anyone else who helped Kurt and Krist get their message accross touched the hearts of people everywhere

to me this song means to be who you are. never let someone make you be something you dont want to be. just be yourself no matter what.
i live by this song everyday. kurt has really helped me to believe in myself and to not take shit from poeple and be myself. i am going to get the words Come As You Are tattooed to my forearm.
memoria | Reviewer: you-know-who | 10/21/08
memoria also means memory en spanish, I know because I'm mexican, but if you separate it, it would be, as the guy of "Memoria (is the key)" said, Me Moria, in english I was dying.
I think, it is about being as you are and not pretending to be another person, not having things to hide. It's my opinion, and I'm not stating it's a fact.
