People Reveal Alot When They Talk | Reviewer: Ghetto Ninja | 10/16/08

To anonymous reviewer 2/24: First off religion is not the root of all evil. Everything else you say is absolute trash. Maybe you should read a bit more about Trent Reznor. You're so caught up in your own reality you fail to see anything else around you. Maybe you should listen to this song and try and comprehend what it's saying. How can a guy who is not religious write songs that have religious undertones? You can not believe in religion or God all you want, but it's still there. Maybe not in your mind, but in others. I for one do not follow a religion. Also you should consider what it means to be religious. You could not believe in a God and still be religious. Religion is a way of life. Daily and weekly practices and rituals. Belief in God is something else entirely. Do you think that everyone that goes to church actually believes in God? I think some go just to look good in the eyes of society. I could go on, but I just wanted to make sure that anyone else who visits this site is not brain-washed by your ignorant comments.

Amazing | Reviewer: Heidi | 9/2/08

This song is amazing.
It is absolutely true, how do we know that we're not the only ones in the world? And how do we know that everything isn't just our own imaginations?
This song makes me think, and step back from life.
I love it.
Every word.

this song for me really focuses on how well we know the things we're so sure about. if this is all just in our heads, what have we done? there's no way to be sure about anything in this world. how do we know the chair we're sitting in is really there? we don't know the extent a human mind can take us, and that leaves a space for uncertainty. i think it's more about if we had all the power in the world, what would we do with it?

Stupid... | Reviewer: Brian Michael West Bitch! | 7/7/08

You guys are arguing over the lyrics of a song!?! FUCK YOU FAGS!!! Not really jus kiddin. But why argue when you can KILL the person who's arguing. I think that killing people is more poetic then the natural forces of the world. Watching the flow of blood out of theirhroats, out of their veins....out of their body. HmmhmmheheHAHAHAHA!!!

Amazing | Reviewer: Luna | 5/23/08

I find this song amazingly powerful.
Ive always been inspired by Trent's lyrics...
To me this song is about people these days thinking that their living such a perfect life, with all their material objects, religion's and money yet continue to look down at those who have fallen behind because of people like that, and its all right where it belongs.
These people are afraid to see who they really are, their living in an illusion, they have a hollowness inside their heart and even if they have all these so called God's and Devil's their actually really all alone.
All that in a nutshell i believe it means.

People are getting way to comfortable with all their material objects, religion's and money that they feel everything is right where it belongs and their afraid to make a change and accept themselves for who they really are and thats why they continue to live in this illusion, its the easy way out, an easier way to be accepted into the world as to what people feel is "right"....

But that's just my personal opinion, what this song speaks to me.

I hope many can relate to this because i feel very strongly about this.

Thankyou.
-Sarah

my take | Reviewer: base tripp | 3/24/08

ok, someone is probobly going to bitch about this, but i personally thing the song is meant to make you think for yourself.. i dont think it has anything to do with religion, or anything of the sort even. i mean, to me its kinda like hes saying stop believing everything you hear, and think for yourself, and not to be afraid to challenge what is accepted as the truth. but anyways, love the song. love the band.

Trent | Reviewer: trent | 2/28/08

Well...i wrote this about World f Warcraft becuase it ruins people's lives...read more into the lyrics. If you listen to the song carefully, towards the end, you can hear world of warcraft sounds in the music.

Response- Religion and Genericness | Reviewer: ryan | 2/27/08

Religion and Genericness reviewer of 2/2/08,
Its true that people take lyrics and apply them to their lives in lots of ways that are probably totally outside of the artist's intention. Is that a bad thing? Of course if you want to know what the artist was concentrating on, you should delve further in. And the only person who will truly know where the artist was and what the artist was feeling is...... the artist.
But regardless of that, looking to lyrics to find your own meaning in them is a great way to figure out things about yourself. Why would this be a bad thing? Maybe "genericness" is a bit intriguing. Maybe some songs sound really good and you want to deeply consider the lyrics in inventive and weird ways. In my opinion, thats great.
Not that it matters, but I don't believe in god. Nevertheless, I still find your take on religion to be a bit shallow and generalizing. If you're trying to escape indoctrination, open your mind, don't close it to entire subjects.

Religion? Seriously? | Reviewer: Scott | 2/27/08

If you think Trent is putting religious undertones in his music, you are sadly mistaken. If his older work is any indicator of his position (which it definitely is), Trent hates the idea of God. If you want an example, listen to Heresy. Or just look up the lyrics. This song isn't about God. 'Nuff said.

Religion and Genericness (hmm, is that even a word?) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/24/08

Frank Franks - Your reply is a perfect example of exactly why you shouldn't believe in god. Religion is the root of all evil. You said in it, you are "scared" to ask questions as you have been "taught" not to question your faith while you were young. That just screams indoctrination of children! I cannot believe that people actually force this religious crap on to young children who do not have a choice in the matter. How is telling your kids "now listen up children, there is a giant fairy in the sky who, if you are bad, will send you to a place full of fire and evil things and you will burn there for all eternity." not indoctrination? And how are young children supposed to love and obey this giant sky fairy when he is such a horrible and ruthless bastard? I'm not surprised that you're scared to question your religion, Frank Franks! It is amazing how something that doesn't exist can envoke so much fear in people. Question your religion, take control of your life, go and look at scientific facts, learn about that evil word starting with 'e'.

Anyway, back on to NIN, his music is awesome, but the religious undertone that a lot of the songs carry can become rather draining and off putting. And maybe we shouldn't try and make sense of the songs. I love it how people try and adapt lyrics to suit their life and the problems they are experiencing, jesus, does no one ever wonder why the songs that people can 'relate' to have the most generic lyrics? Duh! That is how artists sell records people!
