this song is what music should be.... emotional, passionate, intelligent....
the song makes people think, and it doesnt matter what you believe the song is about, as long as it makes you feel something... interpretation of art is a beautiful thing, and 'right where it belongs' makes that a reality... easpecially if you see it performed live, as i have 3 times... the visuals attached to it make you feel love, hate, fear.. and any other thing you could imagine... its just the perfect song.
Jean Baudrillard | Reviewer: D MONEY | 5/18/07
In my opinion this song is Trents recycling of the theories of the famous French sociologist philosopher Jean Baudrillard, the father of post modern theory, who stated that the world that we created is in its "perfection" and its idealization of the image has actually become one of the most violent in history, as it works its violence from the inside, the image kills reality, alienating us, making us nothing more then “reflections” or images to each other. Trent Reznor is actually saying the same thing with emphasis on the doubts the individual faces when looking at a trapped animal who in a way a more honest reflection of himself then the image he sees in a mirror and it is in this "perfect" world that the emptiness is right where it belongs inside his "heart", ironically in the same "perfection" as everything else. I believe this to be true because Trent actually references a lot of modern and post modern philosophy in almost all his songs, relating it to the individual.

In the first verse you hear a car driving followed by silence in the second verse, in the third a muffled crowd, and in the last verse a screaming crowd. Is it just me or is this song Trents thoughts on the way to a concert. Also backing this up, his voice if muffled until the last verse when he "gets on stage," listen you'll hear it. I think if this is true it make this song a powerful look into that man head.

As a friend of mine said about Trent Reznor, "It's like he feels every depressing, sad thoughts in the worlds teenagers' mind and write lyrics about it, Trent is my fave song writer. :)
What life really is | Reviewer: darkanimelight | 4/17/07
I find this song a real look into many peoples lives, especially teens. They trap themselves in a life that they had created according to the blue print of the world's ideals. It's the way many people feel. Unaccepted. Unreal. Not all there. Just as their song "Everyday", they aren't themselves. Just a makeshift image. It's beautifully artist in my point of veiw.

Awesome song. Somehow I keep relating it to The Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding.
The most inspiring song on With_Teeth | Reviewer: Antt | 5/17/06
i have listened through the album several times, but I like to be thorough.
Trent Reznor is an inspirational man. Though all of his songs are incredibly deep and usually require repeats to truly understand the nature, the way this song moves you as an individual is instantly obvious. It is very deep, but i think that, being one of few 'Quiet' songs on the album you expect it to be so. If you dont feel this song is speaking to you, repeat it.
I know this is more a review of NIN overall, but I think understanding the nature of the music and lyrics is essential in understanding a single song you choose to understand.
You can relate to his lyrics because everyone quintessentially has these thoughts, desires, feelings, motives, fears and pains. He draws his inspiration from his own memories.

I really love this song. It is very touching. "Right were it belongs" is beautiful.
Moving and emotional track | Reviewer: drake | 3/3/06
the last track on an uplifting and introspectively challenging work, this song provides the listener with an alternative to today's western, consumeristic world.
ideas from a 6th grade music class:
"i felt a sadness and looking back at past things. The cage represents how i feel about myself and i am more than my reflection. I am more than past things that i have done, so don't reflect on past things but look at who i could be."
"feel that we always have a choice of what to do. and what we do could affect others."
"i thought it was about trapping animals, but then i thought it was about people trapping themselves, and how they can't get out of it."
"if you're not good to yourself the end of the world will come quicker."
"i want to fix all the problems."
"if you keep worrying about one thing and don't go to the next then it will just build up inside."
