A Simple Explaination | Reviewer: Grids | 7/14/09

Mr. Reznor has a certain way with words. Much of the song is just clever poetry, and ruminations of subjects he's visited well in the past. Perhaps a reclarification of paths previously taken, then well-worn into exhaustion.

There is no "You" is his prior self. "Me" is his current identity, abandoned of his make-believe construct as the Character of Rock-Star, it's self-realization done personal.

Any NIN lyric is about love, self-doubt and/or pain and struggle.
The opening line, "Becoming less defined, as days go by." pretty-much sums up the entire song, and every lyric following expands upon this concept: Getting older. Not what I used-to-be. Growing wiser, but not neccessarily smarter.

Mind Control | Reviewer: uhh huh | 6/15/09

This song is about mind control of any sort. When this song came out I had just crawling out of years deep depression caused by the mind control of my X and his family. In had let these people control so many aspects of my life- they had me convinced they were good people but, anything I wanted was suppressed & not good for all. (of them) As I tried to claw out of depression and talked with people I came to the realization that things were not as I thought they were and the more I looked at the situation the clearer it became. Looking back it was pretty funny watching them squirm as they realized I was seeing things (as they really were) they did not want me to see. When I kicked him out I was alone but then again I always was. The X was never there for me... he was nothing more than a puppet of his controlling family, he wasn't real. Making myself believe he was something he was not was a sure way of hurting myself, but I climbed thru it.

Overcoming. | Reviewer: Matt | 4/1/09

In this song, Trent addresses his pain over his past struggles with drug abuse and alcoholism. When he says, "There is no you, there is only me." He seems to make that point pretty clear.
With lines such as "I just made you up to hurt myself," you can see the point unfolds just right if you know the band well enough.

politics vs human condition | Reviewer: jhughes | 1/4/09

any trent reznor song is geared as if its a love song but you have to think about this, is it or is it a reference toward the government that he so clearly hates, some of his songs, yes are about love and dissapointment but i truely believe that this song is in reference to the system and him researching why the govt is so corrupt as it is today, the line states that he picked at his scab and wishes that he didnt because he had clearly got in over his head with scandle "who to trust"and at this point wish he would have just left it be but now he has come to the conclusion that the govt is only what he makes it and it is no stronger than his mind will let it be.

I and I | Reviewer: rich | 10/19/08

He's talking about the same concept that Rastafarians talk about when they say "I and I". Its like, there is no you there is only me because I am everyone and everyone is me... We're all just mirrors of eachother.

You could also interpret it as being about any human relationship (romantic, boss-employee, friend) where the relationship is bringing you down. Its like yo f@ck you, go away, you don't even exist...

And yes, maybe it is a schizophrenic thing but what most of yaall crackaz dont know is that we're all schizophrenic in that reality creates mirror images and mirror opposites... Its kind of a Taoist concept that I'm pretty sure most Americans cant get their heads around. But no I don't think its talking about true schizophrenia where there are multiple personalities... I think he's talking about a mirror of himself, possibly a lover

This is an excellent song.. | Reviewer: Ana | 10/4/08

I've seen NIN from the beginning although, I was just a kid with my face stuck to MTV when it was still "good." Over the years I've "enjoyed" the music but these last few albums have ultimately gained deep respect. I saw a show last month and they ALWAYS have a great show. I've been tore up for a while now over a quadruple murder in my circle where the one of two men are still unconvinced. I thought it was time to go scream my head off and that concert was the bomb. I'm considering hopping a flight to NC to see it again, but, it's all for the fact it was one of the only times I can feel what I really feel over this tragedy and yes... scream my head off.
Thank you Trent- I appreciate you.

BTW I don't see any point in stating what I think this song means b/c it will mean something different to anyone who hears it. Just like a daily horoscope- people will make it fit.

addiction sux | Reviewer: shaikh | 10/6/08

this song is realy so fuckin real if u have this recession period after addiction... U FINALLY REALIZE U R NOT UR MIND.. U R NOT THIS FUCKED UP GUY AFTER ALL.. U R NOT THE THINKER.. u r someone more powerfull, more living, more loving to ur existence.. it is one hell of a struggle

i love this song | Reviewer: michael | 9/29/08

im not saying anyone else is wrong but i think its about a person with scitzophrenia (spelling?), who is trying to accept the fact that the person he see's isnt actually a person but a part of his imagination
"there is no u there is only me" maybe refering to the other person or personality tht he see's and cant get out of his head .... just what i think

"Only" lyrical meaning | Reviewer: Stephen | 8/17/08

In light of the fact that Trent wrote this song, along with most of the rest of the album post-recovery from heroin, I believe that it has to do with his battle with addiction. The "you" is himself as an addicted individual with no control over his own life. The "me" is himself in hindsight, as a person with full control (after conquering the addiction.) Towards the beginning of the song he makes existential references to who he is afterwards. These are the results of depressed thoughts upon long term recovery. The "scab picking" section I believe could either be a flashback to how he began using in the first place, or a window that he sees to fall back into the addiction?

This is just one interpretation that I saw no one else cover on this site. Just thought I would throw it out there.
